Overview Join the Nature Conservancy’s North America Fire program as a Prescribed Fire Practitioner III. The role supports prescribed and wildland fire operations across the United States, conducting burns, preparing fire lines, monitoring post‑burn effects, and maintaining equipment. Responsibilities Perform tasks under the supervision of the Prescribed Fire Module Leader and in coordination with U.S. Forest Service and other partner agencies. Assist with all aspects of prescribed burning, including operating ATVs, UTVs, tractors, chainsaws, leaf blowers, towing trailers, and maintaining assigned equipment. Become competent with mobile mapping and data collection tools such as Collector for ArcGIS and Avenza Maps. Conduct heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain. Follow established safe work practices and maintain accurate records of work time, expenses, and reports. Build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and local communities where assignments occur. Adhere to TNC’s Code of Conduct and maintain a professional and respectful demeanor as part of a diverse team. Contribute to the development of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance professional skills. The position is part‑time, seasonal, and hourly. Workers are expected to be on prescribed‑fire assignments for at least eight weeks during the six‑month employment term, with a minimum assignment length of two weeks. Compensation & Travel Hourly compensation ranges from $25.00 to $28.00, depending on qualifications. Prescribed Fire Practitioners qualified at Firefighter Type One (FFT1) earn between $25.00 and $26.00 per hour, and those with additional qualifications such as Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO), Intermediate Faller (FAL2), or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) can earn up to $28.00 per hour. Travel expenses, meals, and lodging will be covered for assignments. Approved purchases of required equipment may be partially or fully reimbursed. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Must obtain qualifications for Prescribed Fire Crew Member (RXCM) or Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to Integrated Emergency Management System (ICS I‑100), Human Factors on the Fire Line (L‑180), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S‑190), Firefighting Training (S‑130), and one burn under the supervision of a qualified FFT2. Must achieve physical fitness standards as determined by the local Prescribed Fire Manager and TNC Fire Management Manual. Experience operating various types of equipment and ability to obtain required licenses or certifications (e.g., First Aid, CPR). Valid driver’s license and good driving record. Two or more years of experience in fire operations or related land‑management field (desired).
