Onboarding and Advising Intern

Description

The Onboarding and Advising Intern supports incoming and current students through the onboarding advising and registration process to promote a seamless and student-centered experience. This role provides front-line intake and pre-advising services assists students in clarifying academic and career goals and offers guidance on program selection and course registration. The Onboarding and Advising Intern also delivers basic career exploration support introduces transfer and academic planning resources and helps students navigate institutional addition the role contributes to administrative functions data tracking and cross-departmental collaboration to enhance student success and ensure alignment between academic pathways and career outcomes.

Example of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

Student Intake & Onboarding
  • Serve as a first point of contact for incoming students through greeting intake and pre-advising support
  • Verify student readiness for enrollment including confirmation of high school transcripts and Registration Ready status
  • Assist students with account setup and access including student ID and institutional email activation
  • Introduce advising materials and onboarding resources including distribution and explanation of advising packets
  • Provide guided tutorials on student systems (e.g. Self-Service) to support navigation and independence
  • Offer initial exposure to transfer pathways including overview of transfer guides and university partner options
Advising & Career Exploration
  • Facilitate career-informed advising conversations using structured questioning (e.g. Future 5 or similar frameworks)
  • Support students in clarifying academic and career goals aligned with their intended program of study
  • Assist with major selection program changes and career exploration processes
  • Guide students in understanding connections between programs of study and career pathways

Registration & Academic Planning Support
  • Provide hands-on registration assistance aligned with students chosen degree plans
  • Support students in course selection to ensure progression toward program completion
  • Deliver services in high-volume environments such as Registration Labs.
  • Reinforce institutional policies deadlines and processes related to course registration
Administrative & Operational Support
  • Maintain accurate student records and documentation in institutional systems
  • Develop and update advising materials including packet buildouts and resource guides
  • Manage communication channels including voicemail triage and follow-up with students
Collaboration & Student Success Initiatives
  • Partner with Student Experience units and other campus departments to support a seamless student experience
  • Contribute to cross-functional efforts that promote student retention persistence and completion
  • Participate in team meetings trainings and professional development opportunities
Additional Responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of advising enrollment and student success initiatives

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience Preferred

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Understanding of and/or experience in appreciative advising and/or proactive advising techniques.
  • Experience working in a community college and/or an understanding of the challenges faced by community college students including first-generation students adult learners and diverse student populations.
