This position provides timely assessment and prioritization of patients presenting to the Emergency Department while promoting patient safety, efficient throughput, and effective communication among the emergency care team. This position requires flexibility in job duties as assigned such as dedicated Triage Nurse or bedside nursing.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSGraduate of accredited professional nursing program, BSN preferred• Current RN license in IndianaMinimum of 2 years of Emergency Department nursing experience requiredBLS-Healthcare Provider (Basic Life Support) within 3 months of hire dateACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) within 3 months of hire datePALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) within 3 months of hire dateNIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) within 3months of hire dateNIMS 100 (National Incident Management System) within 3 months of hire dateNIMS 200 (National Incident Management System) within 3 months of hire dateNIMS 700 (National Incident Management System) with Charge Nurse orientationESI (Emergency Severity Index) upon hireNRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) within 1 year of hire dateTNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) within 2 years of hire dateStrong emergency assessment, critical-thinking, communication, teamwork, and organizational skillsAbility to recognize changes in patient condition, escalate concerns, and prioritize multiple patients based on acuity and clinical presentationPRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESPerform timely initial assessments and triage of patients presenting to the Emergency Department.Assign appropriate acuity levels according to the department's approved triage process.Identify patients requiring immediate intervention and promptly communicate concerns to the Charge RN and emergency provider.Communicate with the Charge RN regarding patient acuity, department capacity, and appropriate bed assignments.Continuously reassess patients remaining in the waiting area and recognize changes in condition.Initiate approved nursing protocols and standing orders when appropriate.Maintain accurate and timely documentation of triage assessments and reassessments.Facilitate efficient patient flow from arrival through placement in the Emergency Department.Communicate delays and pertinent updates to patients and families in a professional and compassionate manner.Collaborate closely with the Charge RN, bedside nurses, providers, registration staff, and ancillary departments.Assist with department quality audits, chart reviews, and other assigned quality-improvement activities during periods of lower patient census.Maintain awareness of overall Emergency Department census and acuity.Assume a patient care assignment when department needs, census, or acuity require additional bedside nursing support.Assist with emergency situations and other patient-care needs throughout the department as necessary.PREFERRED CANDIDATEThe successful RN will be an experienced emergency nurse who is confident working independently, demonstrates strong clinical judgment, communicates effectively, and understands the critical role triage plays in patient safety and Emergency Department throughput.
