Direct Support Professional (DSP) – Day Program

Supporting Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, and motivated Direct Support Professional (DSP) to join our Day Program team supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The DSP plays a critical role in helping individuals achieve greater independence, community inclusion, personal growth, and quality of life through daily support, skill-building activities, and person-centered care.

This position involves assisting participants in a structured day program environment while promoting dignity, respect, choice, and meaningful engagement.

Provide direct supervision and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a day program setting.

Assist participants with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed, including:

Personal hygiene

Toileting

Feeding assistance

Mobility and transfers

Support individuals in maintaining a safe, clean, and positive environment.

Monitor participant well-being and report changes in behavior, mood, health, or physical condition to supervisors.

Implement individualized goals and support plans based on participant needs and interests.

Communication skills

Social skills

Vocational and pre-employment skills

Lead or assist with educational, recreational, therapeutic, and community-based activities.

Encourage independence, self-advocacy, and active participation in programming.

Accompany participants on community outings, volunteer opportunities, recreational events, and appointments as assigned.

Support safe transportation and community engagement.

Promote positive social interactions and inclusion within the community.

Complete daily documentation, progress notes, incident reports, attendance records, and data tracking accurately and on time.

Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.

Follow all state regulations, agency policies, safety procedures, and person-centered practices.

Utilize positive behavior support techniques and de-escalation strategies.

Maintain a calm, professional demeanor during challenging situations.

Respond appropriately to emergencies following agency protocol.

Ensure participant safety at all times.

Work collaboratively with supervisors, nurses, case managers, guardians, and interdisciplinary teams.

Attend staff meetings, trainings, and required certifications.

Contribute to a respectful, supportive, and team-oriented work environment.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED

Minimum age requirement per state regulations (typically 18 years or older)

Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Ability to pass background checks, drug screening, and required clearances

Ability to lift, transfer, and assist individuals as needed

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Reliable attendance and punctuality

Experience working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, autism, mental health needs, or behavioral challenges

CPR/First Aid certification

Experience in day programs, caregiving, healthcare, education, or human services
