Behavior Technician (Multiple Vacancies)

Supervisor: Principal, Behavior Interventionist, or Board Certified Behavior Analyst

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The Elementary Behavior Technician provides proactive, preventative behavioral and social-emotional support to elementary students in general education settings. Under the supervision of the Behavior Interventionist (BI) and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and in collaboration with school administrators, teachers, and counselors, the Technician delivers direct behavior-analytic services, including implementation of Behavior Support Plans (BSP), data collection, and Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions designed to improve student behavior, emotional regulation skills, and access to instruction.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Provide proactive behavioral support, teaching emotional regulation, coping, and social skills using Safe and Civil Schools CHAMPS interventions and strategies in classrooms, small groups, and schoolwide settings.
  • Implement Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) and de-escalation strategies with fidelity, reinforcing classroom behavior strategies that align with CHAMPS expectations and routines.
  • Facilitate and support Tier 1 (CHAMPS & school-wide expectations/practices) and Tier 2 interventions (e.g., Check-In/Check-Out (CICO), behavior contracts, self-monitoring) aligned with Virginia Tiered Systems of Support (VTSS).
  • Partner with the counselor to identify students who would benefit from small group social-emotional skill support.
  • Collect, document, and monitor student behavior data to track progress and inform interventions.
  • Maintain assigned student caseloads and ensure consistent implementation of supports.
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, BCBA, and BI to support student behavior.
  • Support the Student Support Team (SST) for behavioral-focused meetings using Function-Based Thinking (FBT).
  • Participate in monthly check-ins, coaching, and professional development with the BI and/or BCBA
  • Follow all district, school, state, and federal policies while maintaining student confidentiality, safety, and dignity.
Additional Duties:
  • Performs other related work as required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING
  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university or completion of 48 credit hours from an accredited college or university or passing score on the ParaPro examination.
  • Experience working with children or adolescents in an educational setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with colleagues and children.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining required certifications and engaging in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Current Registered Behavior Technician® certification OR willingness to obtain certification, preferred.
  • Experience with Safety Care (Physical Management and De-escalation), preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the field of child development with specific application to the area of special education and related services.
  • Knowledge of District policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and equipment.
  • Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Ability to maintain considerable patience and awareness of the different disabilities of students in assigned locations.
  • Ability to assist students with personal care/hygiene needs such as diapering, toilet training, handling clothing fasteners, bath rooming adolescents and young adults, and feeding students.
  • Ability to physically assist students, such as lifting, transferring, and other activities required to care for students with physical disabilities.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely in verbal and written form.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with and provide a broad range of assistance to the instructional staff.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to implement and monitor behavior plans/interventions with fidelity and accept coaching and feedback
  • Ability to work with students with intensive or escalated behavioral needs, required the ability to maintain composure and manage personal emotions in challenging situations.
Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job duties.

This position may require moderate to occasionally heavy physical effort, including the ability to lift, move, position, or assist students and equipment. Employees may be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 75-100 pounds occasionally, with or without assistance or adaptive equipment.

Work is performed while standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, and repositioning throughout the workday. Duties may require:
  • Assisting with student mobility and transfers.
  • Pushing or pulling equipment such as wheelchairs, adaptive seating, or instructional materials.
  • Using hands for grasping, handling, fine motor tasks, and repetitive motions.
  • Occasional kneeling, squatting, or climbing stairs.
  • Communicating effectively using speech, hearing, and vision.



Physical activity levels will vary based on student needs, classroom assignments, and instructional activities.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily indoors within a classroom or instructional support setting. The environment typically has a low to moderate noise level, though noise levels may increase during student transitions or behavioral episodes.

Employees may work in proximity to mobility equipment and adaptive devices, including wheelchairs, walkers, lifts, or other supports. Staff are expected to follow division safety procedures and utilize proper lifting techniques and available assistance to maintain a safe work environment

In addition to the base salary, Behavior Technicians are eligible to receive up to $3,000 in stipends annually if they: 1) maintain or earn RBT during the first year of employment, and 2) remain with the division for the full school year. Stipends will be paid out at the end of year if all conditions are met.
