Director Of Environmental Health, Safety, And Workers' Compensation

This leadership role oversees all environmental, health, safety (EHS), and workers' compensation programs to create a safe, compliant, and proactive safety culture across office, fabrication, and field construction environments. The director develops and implements safety and environmental policies, ensures regulatory compliance, manages workers' compensation claims, and provides strategic guidance to reduce risk and protect employees, equipment, and facilities.

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with leadership to develop, prepare, and implement comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and programs.
• Ensure full compliance with applicable federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes, and rules, including OSHA standards.
• Oversee and ensure timely completion of all required OSHA recordkeeping and reporting.
• Stop operations and activities that pose a risk of harm to employees, equipment, or facilities, and implement corrective actions.
• Identify and drive opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and occupational health problems.
• Plan, conduct, and oversee employee safety training, including construction and site safety, and recommend revisions and improvements to training content and delivery.
• Review and analyze accident and incident reports to identify root causes, trends, and preventative measures.
• Conduct environmental and health inspections to identify risks in office, fabrication, and field environments.
• Draft thorough inspection reports documenting findings, corrective actions, and follow-up requirements.
• Develop and implement inspection policies, procedures, and a schedule of routine inspections for facilities and job sites.
• Prepare and deliver training covering emergency procedures, workplace safety, environmental requirements, and other relevant topics.
• Ensure material safety data sheets (MSDS/SDS) are properly maintained, current, and readily accessible to employees.
• Maintain accurate records of discharge of, or employee exposure to, hazardous waste and pollutants as required by regulations.
• Review workers' compensation claim forms for accuracy and completeness.
• Evaluate injury reports to assess appropriate compensation and estimate anticipated costs for each claim.
• Approve medical treatment, hospitalization, and surgery in accordance with workers' compensation guidelines and internal policies.
• Calculate permanent disability ratings in alignment with applicable workers' compensation regulations.
• Coordinate payment of medical bills, disability compensation, and death benefits, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
• Maintain detailed records, files, and databases of workers' compensation claims and prepare summary reports of collected data.
• Provide employees and client companies with information and training regarding workers' compensation benefits and processes.
• Use risk management principles to identify, assess, and mitigate safety and workers' compensation exposures across projects and facilities.
• Leverage EHS and workers' compensation software, including ISNetworld, to manage compliance, documentation, and reporting.
• Supervise assigned team members, providing clear direction, coaching, and support.
• Conduct timely and constructive performance evaluations for direct reports.
• Collaborate with construction and manufacturing teams to ensure site safety, including adherence to construction safety practices and site-specific safety plans.
• Travel regularly to active field job sites to build relationships with field teams, conduct inspections, and support site safety initiatives.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to support organizational safety, environmental, and workers' compensation goals.

Essential Skills:

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or a related field.
• Ten years of related experience preferred in environmental health and safety, construction safety, or a similar field.
• Extensive knowledge of company safety policies and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
• Extensive knowledge of environmental regulations and policies relevant to manufacturing and construction environments.
• Extensive knowledge and understanding of applicable workers' compensation laws, procedures, and regulations.
• Extensive knowledge of medical and technical terminology used in workers' compensation cases.
• Proficiency with technology and equipment used in environmental inspections.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EHS and workers' compensation software, including ISNetworld.
• Demonstrated experience in safety management, construction safety, site safety, and risk management.
• Experience with claims management for workers' compensation.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to interpret data and identify trends.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for training, reporting, and stakeholder engagement.
• Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
• Strong supervisory and leadership skills, including performance management and team development.
• Ability to travel to active field job sites on a regular basis (e.g., approximately once a month or as needed).
• Ability to work at heights and climb structures exceeding 65 feet while following all applicable safety requirements.
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds occasionally and work at a sustained pace while producing quality work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or a related discipline is desirable.
• Professional certifications preferred, such as EHS, OSHA, CESCO, ISO, and Train the Trainer.
• Manufacturing and/or construction industry experience is preferred.
• Experience delivering safety training programs, including OSHA safety training and construction safety topics.
• Experience using EHS, OSHA safety, and risk management frameworks to reduce incidents and improve safety culture.
• Ability to build strong relationships with field teams and office staff, contributing to a family-oriented, collaborative culture.
• Comfort working in a rapidly growing organization and contributing to unique, differentiating safety and risk management initiatives.

Work Environment:

The role operates primarily in an office environment located outside of the fabrication shop, with frequent interaction with construction and manufacturing operations. The position requires regular travel to active field job sites, including exposure to varying weather conditions, construction environments, and elevated work areas. The work involves frequent sitting, squatting, talking, and hearing, as well as constant use of hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms. The role also requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and walking, as well as occasional lifting and moving of up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The position is fully in person, with some travel required within the first year to build strong relationships with field teams and ensure consistent safety practices. Job Type & Location:

This is a Permanent position based out of Sioux Falls, SD.

Pay and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $110000.00 - $150000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
