JOB SUMMARY:Responsible for maintaining and repairing a variety of heavy equipment and vehicles. Work involves diagnosing problems and performing repairs and preventive maintenance on all types of sugar cane harvesting and related equipment. Types of equipment will depend on area of assignment - harvester and tractor; trailer; or truck shop.Work is performed under limited supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative. Position relies on experience and exercises some independent judgement to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The essential functions in this job description are intended only as an illustration of the various types of duties that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from job performance requirements if work is similar or related to the job.Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all tractors, sugar cane harvest equipment, and any other equipment in the Agriculture Department’s field and shop operationsAssists in the tire servicing of all types of equipment, including forklifts, front-end loaders, tractors and harvesting equipmentRepairs harvest equipment (e.g., cane elevators, cane harvesters, tractors, air compressors) and any equipment utilized in support of agricultureInspects and diagnoses equipment failure, performs timed repairs, and oversees the operation of numerous lifting devices, including proper rigging proceduresPerforms preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment; maintains applicable service and repair logsUtilizes standard shop hand tools, measuring devices, and equipmentWorks collaboratively with other team members and supervisors to achieve project goalsEnsures the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all timesFollows organizational and public safety guidelines and protocols, performs job functions in a safe manner, and reports all safety hazards per established policies and proceduresSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:NoneMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of mechanical experience in maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of agricultural equipment;OR a combination of experience, certification, education and training that demonstrates expertise in the related areas.CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:Must possess and maintain a regular Class “E” Driver’s licenseMust have own set of toolsPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifiedA/C certificationBilingual – English and SpanishKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of heavy equipment mechanicsKnowledge of safety protocols and compliance standards related to equipment operationSkill in the use of applicable department and organization specific software; ability to learn and become proficient in the use of other specialized software as may be requiredSkill in using mathematics required for the workAbility to read manuals, blueprints, schematics, and diagramsAbility to troubleshoot and repair equipmentAbility to comprehend and convey mechanical informationAbility to work in hot, cold, wet, humid, dusty, and foggy working conditions depending on weatherAbility to adapt quickly to a multicultural environmentAbility to work under pressure and meet deadlinesAbility to follow instructions from supervisors and senior workersAbility to work cooperatively as a member of a service-oriented teamAbility to clearly communicate and understand information in English, orally and in writingAbility to follow public safety guidelines and protocols and perform job functions in a safe mannerAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgroundsAbility to maintain regular attendance to ensure efficient and effective performance of job dutiesAMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) REQUIREMENTS:Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds). Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors.
