Located on Madison’s east side, Olbrich features a 10,000-square-foot tropical conservatory and 16 acres of stunning outdoor gardens, welcoming nearly 400,000 visitors annually, including more than 8,500 member households. The outdoor gardens include 10 unique specialty gardens and received the 2022 American Horticultural Society Environmental Award. Indoors, the tropical Bolz Conservatory exhibits an extraordinary collection of exotic plants and orchids complemented by colorful birds and koi. Olbrich Botanical Gardens is operated through a public/private partnership between the City of Madison and the Olbrich Botanical Society (OBS), the non-profit organization that raises over $4.7 million each year to support the daily operation of the Gardens. Together both entities manage a combined operating budget of $7 million and an additional yearly capital improvement budget. OBS helps lead capital campaigns, including its most recent campaign (2020) that raised $6 million to build new greenhouses and the Frautschi Family Learning Center. Requirements PURPOSE OF POSITION The Gift Shop Associate position at Olbrich Botanical Gardens provides an outstanding shopping and visiting experience for Olbrich Botanical Garden’s guests. This includes exceptional customer service including de-escalation skills, loss prevention awareness, general retail maintenance, cash handling and light cleaning duties. It also requires a strong attention to detail, the ability to be comfortable with a wide range of visitors and volunteers and the ability to work independently. Additionally, this position is a key part of Olbrich’s “front of house” team. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Customer Service & Hospitality (50%) Provide an excellent shopping experience for each guest Welcome, educate and assist guests as they enter the building Provide general information about the visit, assist in enforcing Olbrich Garden’s policies and procedures and direct guests to special programs and exhibits Communicate with guests regarding Olbrich Garden’s Membership program De-escalate guest interactions as needed Financial Operations (40%) Open and close the registers Reconcile daily sales including cash, credit cards and gift cards Prepare daily bank deposit and submit it to the Financial Coordinator Other Related Duties (10%) Stock product Help check in product shipments Assist in cleaning and organizing the Gift Shop and back-stock areas Participate in monthly and yearly inventory checks This job description describes the general nature and scope of responsibilities for this position. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Excellent customer service skills Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills Patience when dealing with difficult customers Proficiency with computer technology including Microsoft Office Suite, Square POS, and the ability to learn other computer programs as needed Commitment to Olbrich Botanical Gardens mission Ability to work on a cross-department team to provide the best solutions for the Gardens Appreciation for gardening, nature and the environment REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent At least 2 years of related experience Advanced customer service skills Basic math and problem-solving skills The ability to use a cash register, count cash, and reconcile deposits A strong level of professionalism at work Ability to work in a fast-paced environment WORK ENVIRONMENT Ability to bend, stoop, kneel and lift 25 pounds Requires standing for up to 6 hours at a time on hard surfaces Ability to move throughout the small Gift Shop including during busy seasons Ability to work within confined spaces including merchandise storage areas Ability to work in crowded environments with the public Dependability and availability to adjust work schedule to include nights and weekends if necessary Work is performed primarily in Olbrich’s Gift Shop/lobby area and is sometimes in demanding situations including a loud working environment, high visitor traffic with many changing priorities, technological malfunctions, etc. WORK SCHEDUL E Must be available to work one weekend day per week and have flexibility to change schedule as needed to best support the Gardens. Expected hours / week 0 –19. Garden hours are as follows: April - September ( 10am – 6pm ) , October – March ( 10am – 4pm ) . Opening and closing shifts add 30 minutes before or after.
