Senior Manager, Tax

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Manager, Tax is a key leadership role within Honigman LLP’s Finance team, supporting the Firm’s overall financial objectives through effective tax strategy, compliance, and risk management. This position works closely with senior leadership to develop and implement tax strategies aligned with the Firm’s operational and financial goals.

The Senior Manager, Tax is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the tax preparation and accounting process, including managing domestic and international tax compliance filings, conducting technical tax research, and analyzing complex accounting issues. This role plays a critical part in enhancing firmwide awareness of tax risks and compliance requirements through education, proactive review of business activities, and evaluation of contractual arrangements.

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Senior Manager, Tax collaborates extensively with the Firm’s internal attorney tax team and external professional advisors to ensure accurate reporting, regulatory compliance, and strategic tax planning across all jurisdictions.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Tax Operations & Compliance
  • Manage all operational tax compliance matters, including:
  • Estimated tax calculations and payments.
  • Book-to-tax reconciliations.
  • Property tax filings and personal property tax returns.
  • Sales and use tax filings across multiple states.
  • Transfer pricing arrangements and documentation.
  • VAT and other indirect tax filings (domestic and international).
  • Oversee the preparation and review of federal, state, local, and foreign tax returns.
  • Ensure accurate tax accruals and timely execution of all tax payments.
  • Develop tax support schedules and review partner tax forms (K-1, K-2, K-3) prepared by third-party providers.
  • Coordinate with external advisors, tax authorities, and internal stakeholders.
Partner & Employee Tax Management
  • Lead the Pass-Through Entity (PTE) tax process, including:
  • Coordinate and communicate directly with partners regarding key tax matters, filings, and obligations.
  • Provide tax-related support for partner and employee reporting and planning needs.
  • Lead tax planning initiatives to optimize the firm’s tax position and manage risk.
  • Assist with the preparation of budgets and forecasts for domestic and international tax expenses.
  • Advise leadership on tax implications of firm initiatives, compensation structures, and transactions.
  • Develop a strong understanding of firm financial structures, including loan agreements, to:
  • Identify potential covenant or tax-related risks.
  • Advise the CFO and FP&A leadership on issues and solutions.
Global & State Tax Management
  • Manage global tax exposures, including cross-border operations and compliance.
  • Ensure appropriate treatment of foreign income and application of foreign tax credits.
  • Research and analyze state nexus requirements and develop implementation plans for new state tax filings.
  • Monitor multi-jurisdictional tax obligations and ensure compliance with local regulations.
Controls, Policies & Process Improvement
  • Oversee tax-related internal controls and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Develop and maintain tax accounting policies and procedures to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
  • Work closely with General Accounting to ensure proper classification and tracking of firm assets for tax reporting.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities.
  • Monitor changes in tax laws, regulations, and rulings; evaluate impact on the firm’s compliance, strategy, and reporting.
  • Ensure firm management principles, policies, and programs are consistently applied within tax operations.
  • Coordinate with internal departments (e.g., Accounting, FP&A, HR) to fulfill tax-related requests and initiatives.
  • Support cross-functional efforts to improve overall financial and operational performance.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA required; MST, JD, or LL.M. in Tax preferred).
  • 7+ years of progressive tax experience, preferably within a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Strong expertise in partnership taxation and pass-through entities.
  • Experience with state and international tax matters, including foreign tax credits and nexus analysis.
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local tax regulations.
  • Experience reviewing complex partner reporting forms (K-1, K-2, K-3).
  • Familiarity with transfer pricing, indirect tax, and global tax compliance frameworks.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Pay Range and Compensation Package

Honigman provides a generous total compensation package, which includes comprehensive health and well-being benefits, as well as 401k and profit sharing. The anticipated annual pay range for this role is $135,000 to $175,000 (exempt). The actual offered pay rate will be determined based on various factors, including qualifications, experience, geographic location, education, external market data, and internal equity considerations.
