JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Welder Apprentice

Department: Construction
Reports To: Supervisor
Location: PFM Jobsites Guam USA 
Employment Type: Apprenticeship (Full-Time)

Summary/Objective:

The Welder Apprentice will learn to operate welding equipment, prepare materials, and perform welds on various metals. Focusing on safety and quality, the apprentice will gain hands-on experience with welding techniques, equipment maintenance, and material preparation, while following blueprints and specifications. This program provides a solid foundation for a career in welding, emphasizing precision, safety, and teamwork.

Essential Functions:

  • Follow safety practices and operate safety equipment to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Inspect workpieces for defects and verify measurements using precision tools such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Operate welding equipment, including shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding tools, in various positions.
  • Select and install appropriate torches, filler rods, and flux according to job specifications.
  • Ignite torches, strike arcs, and direct flames or electrodes to manipulate and weld metals.
  • Detect equipment malfunctions, report issues to supervisors, and ensure proper operation of welding tools.
  • Clean and prepare workpieces, ensuring they are free from contaminants, and mark materials with job numbers or piece marks.
  • Align, clamp, and assemble workpieces using hand tools or fixtures for proper assembly and welding.
  • Preheat workpieces before welding, secure them with hoists or cranes, and operate grinding equipment to ensure a proper fit.
  • Operate metal-forming equipment, such as brakes and shears, to shape and refine workpieces.
  • Assemble temporary structures such as scaffolding or ladders as needed.
  • Review blueprints and instructions to plan and execute welding tasks efficiently, ensuring accuracy and quality.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor, in alignment with the position's responsibilities, may also be required to support the team and business objectives

Qualification, Competencies and Requirements 

  • Demonstrate an ability and willingness to participate in an approved Welder apprenticeship training program.
  • Education: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (such as a GED).
  • Must be a U.S. C or eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have been a resident of Guam for more than one (1) year before entry into the program.
  • Mayor’s Verification must be submitted upon hire to confirm your residency status.
  • Must commit to attending at least two (2) classes per week, as determined by the apprenticeship program standards, while maintaining a 40-hour weekly work schedule with PFM.

Work Environment

  • Work outside in various conditions including heat, humidity, rain, dust, noise and cold
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds at times
  • Must be willing to work between multiple worksites

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, hourly position. Hours of Operation are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. However, due to operational needs, may be required to work before or after normal hours of operations, on weekends or holidays.

Travel

No travel is expected for this position.
