PIPE FITTER TRAINEE

Location Newport News, Virginia, United States Position Details Full‑time position. Multiple shifts. No relocation assistance. No telework eligibility. Travel: No. Clearance: Not required to start. U.S. citizenship required. The Role This position is for candidates with no trades experience willing to complete three weeks of unpaid training in the Pipefitter trade. Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local community colleges to offer several Marine Trades Training programs. The Pipefitter Trainee program is offered at Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth, VA) and lasts 3 weeks (120 hours) Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Pipefitters install complex piping systems on ships, including over 23 miles on submarines and more than 230 miles on aircraft carriers. Responsibilities include reading blueprints, fabricating, installing, inspecting, and testing ship piping systems, assembling, welding, securing pipe, and troubleshooting and repairing existing systems. Work often involves various weather conditions, extreme heights, and confined spaces. Qualifications Must be able to complete the 120‑hour unpaid training program. Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and drug screen. Must be able to pass a physical agility test. Ability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis. Ability to lift at least 40 pounds. Ability to perform overhead work. Ability to work overtime as needed. Must be clean shaven to wear a respirator. Ability to work outdoors year‑round in all weather conditions. Ability to work at extreme heights. Ability to work in small, tight, confined spaces. Willingness to work any shift.
