Dual Sonographer - Echo & Vascular Labs - UI Heart and Vascular Center

The UI Heart and Vascular Center (HVC) is seeking a full‑time (100%) Sonographer to perform a range of adult cardiac and vascular ultrasound procedures. The role includes teaching, evaluating, and advising students, residents, and fellows within their area of expertise, assisting with invasive procedures, and supporting vascular and echocardiography studies. The position will rotate between the echocardiography and vascular labs at the main medical campus, provide backup coverage at the North Liberty campus, and participate in the vascular lab call rotation. Responsibilities Perform adult cardiac and vascular ultrasonography procedures, including two‑dimensional echo, M‑mode, pulse wave and continuous wave Doppler, color flow Doppler, 3D, strain, exercise and dobutamine stress echo studies, and specialized diagnostic non‑invasive vascular testing of peripheral arterial, venous and cerebrovascular circulation. Assist physicians with acquiring images during TEE studies and perform contrast and saline bubble studies as needed. Provide and maintain quality diagnostic adult echocardiographic and vascular exams. Perform equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed. Maintain quality control in accordance with departmental standards. Assist cardiologists and vascular surgeons with non‑invasive, invasive, or Doppler procedures. Identify basic equipment malfunctions and coordinate resolutions. Provide information and instruction to patients, families, or others regarding diagnostic procedures. Maintain continuing education as specified by the ARDMS and IAC. Contribute to preparation for IAC accreditation. Instruct fellows, residents, and students on scanning techniques and equipment operation. Follow general policies and procedures in accordance with UI Health Care regulations. Assist with policy development and review. Act as a preceptor for orientation of new team members and students. Establish and maintain standards of collaborative interaction among peers and employees. Provide rotating on‑call coverage on weekends and university holidays as assigned. Provide coverage for the UI Heart and Vascular Center at Medical Campus University (MCU) and Medical Campus North Liberty (MCNL) as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Education Requirements Completion of a CAAHEP‑accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, or Vascular Technology. Completion of a two‑year or more accredited health science program (e.g., Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing) plus a twelve‑month formal Sonography education program. Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus a twelve‑month formal Cardiac Ultrasonography education program. Experience Requirements Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills with patients, families, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary team members. Valid driver’s license and compliance with the University’s Fleet Safety Program. Experience in adult cardiac and vascular ultrasonography (specific years not mandated in the posting). Certification/Licensure Requirements Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in Diagnostic Cardiac and Vascular Sonography within nine (9) months following start of employment. Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography within nine (9) months following start of employment. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required by start of employment. Desired Qualifications Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus a twelve‑month formal Cardiac Ultrasonography education program. AART (CI) certification.
