Found in 1974, United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII) is the only Urban Indian Organization in Los Angeles County, proudly serving as a home for American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Through our healthcare facility and culturally centered programs, we provide essential physical, behavioral, and spiritual health services—helping individuals stay connected to their Tribal heritage and traditions.

For over 50 years, UAII has grown to become the largest nonprofit provider of health and human services for American Indians and Alaska Natives in Los Angeles, home to the nation’s largest Urban Indian population. Job Summary

United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII), is seeking an experienced Board-Certified Physician to serve as a clinical leader responsible for delivering high-quality primary and preventive care while providing oversight and guidance to clinic staff. This role supports UAII’s mission by advancing culturally responsive healthcare for American Indian and Alaska Native communities and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and organizational standards.

Reports to: Executive Director, Healthcare

Essential Functions

  • Provide leadership and oversight for all Healthcare clinic staff.
  • Ensure alignment with UAII’s mission, Indigenous values, and organizational priorities.
  • Provide medical services to the patients of CCHC, inclusive of all functions necessary to provide quality medical care.
  • To stabilize and refer, when necessary, patients presenting to office in need of urgent care regardless of whether the patient falls within the category normally seen by that physician.
  • To examine and treat any patient assigned to another provider or assist in the triaging and rescheduling should that other provider be unable to attend or complete their office duties for emergency reasons.
  • To complete the patient charts according to the usual accepted standards of the medical practice and according to the specific requirements set forth by the medical record criteria requirements.
  • To assist in obtaining lab specimens from their patients should difficulty be encountered in obtaining such specimens.
  • To complete administrative projects as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • To complete any requirements needed to maintain a medical license, board certification or admitting privileges at the hospital to which they admit their patients.
  • To participate in the on-call schedule as set forth by the Clinic Supervisor.
  • To serve as preceptor for medical students, nurse practitioners, physician assistant students, and residents as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • To be familiar with and adhere to all of the medical offices policy and procedure manuals.
  • Serving as supervisory physician for the mid-level providers regarding family or internal medicine and State regulatory requirements.
  • Compliance and regulatory expectations: HIPAA compliance, HRSA/FQHC (if applicable), OSHA safety compliance (partially covered), State and federal healthcare regulations
  • Continually advise administration of any issues that may impact the practice.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by the Executive Director.
Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • Graduate from an accredited medical school with a degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO).
  • Completion of an accredited residency.
  • Board certification or board eligible in specialty.
  • Unrestricted license to practice within California.
  • Valid DEA.
  • PALS or NRP, ACLS may be required
  • Experience working in an Urban Indian Organization (UIO) or Tribal health program.
  • Familiarity with Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) and Department of Public Health (DPH) systems.
  • Experience with EHR systems, particularly eClinicalWorks (eCW).
  • Knowledge of Indigenous governance, community engagement, and culturally informed care models.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of principles, procedures, methods and techniques of medical and health care.
  • Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of medical diagnosis.
  • Ability to keep all Medical and DEA License, CME, etc., current.
  • Ability to know how to listen, as well as how to explain complicated conditions or procedures to someone with no medical background.
  • Must have the analytical skills to review symptoms and test results and determine a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
  • Good interpersonal skills are needed in communicating clearly and compassionately with patients and their families.
  • Ability to stay abreast of new techniques, new equipment and be contemporary with the latest medical discoveries.
  • Practice using sound medical judgment and adhere to all ethical considerations of the practice of medicine.
  • Know limitations and seek consult when advisable.
  • Work productivity must demonstrate quality outcomes (HEDIS, UDS) - patient satisfaction, care coordination, Provider productivity benchmarks.
  • Effectively work patients into their schedules as the caseload demands and respond to a variety of unforeseen daily circumstances, including emergency care of patients.
  • Leadership competencies: leadership and team development, cultural humility in practice, decision-making and conflict resolution, collaboration with community stakeholders
  • Ability to see patients in a timely and efficient manner, staying reasonably on time for scheduled appointments throughout the day, unless exceptional circumstances occur.

Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the primary functions of this job:

This is a fully on-site position, and the successful applicant will be expected to work on-site daily.

Normal office conditions exist, and the noise level in the work environment can vary from low to moderate. Because of occupational exposure to aerosol transmissible diseases, employees are strongly encouraged to receive annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations to not only protect their health, but also the health of our colleagues and the community. In the absence of the recommended vaccinations, employees are advised to wear a mask at all times while on company premises as a precautionary measure to help prevent the spread of illnesses.

Potential occasional exposure to low dose radiation hazards, hazardous chemicals and body fluids and waste. Personal protective equipment provided. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. Work is performed in a health clinic setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Will work with blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training. This job routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, photocopiers, and fax machines.
