Electric Meter Technician

This position is responsible for testing and repairing equipment used to obtain electric usage data.

Major duties and knowledge required by the position include:

  • Generates reports to determine electric bills, makes necessary adjustments and credits, and forwards to data processing.
  • Installs and wires all transformer-rated services.
  • Determines causes for low consumption during a billing cycle.
  • Reads the system's largest customer meters by phone, laptop, and by hand.
  • Performs residential and commercial energy audits and related programs.
  • Performs residential and commercial power quality analysis.
  • Reads industrial electric meters, records data.
  • Operates all systems associated with an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) System
  • Utilizes applicable translations systems in billing customers.
  • Tests and repairs single and poly-phase meters; replaces older meters as needed.
  • Tests and replaces current transformers (CT's) and potential transformers (PT's).
  • Utilizes applicable meter, CT, and PT portable test equipment.
  • Reads and inspects City and MEAG substations and related line equipment.
  • Completes job orders received from customer service and data processing.
  • Installs and wires current transformer rated services.
  • Maintains the meter card file.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Occasionally performs dispatch duties and use of SCADA.
  • Occasionally performs duties to locate underground power lines.
  • Occasionally assist in station and distribution switching activities
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Integrated Transmission System (ITS) certification.
  • Participates in after-hours, on-call rotation.
  • Will communicate with industrial customers, meter contractors, and co-workers.
  • Perform revenue protection investigations on self-contained and CT rated metering circuits.
  • Install, repair, inspect, program and/or test traffic signal systems
  • Install, repair, inspect, program, and/or test school zone light warning systems
  • Occasionally install, repair and/or make safe electric services, especially during major storm restoration activities
  • Knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC) and National Electric Safety Code (NESC)
  • Knowledge of city policies and procedures pertaining to the reading of electric meters.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical functions of electric meters.
  • Knowledge of electronic and electromechanical components.
  • Knowledge of electronic meter reading recording equipment.
  • Knowledge of residential electrical codes and standards.
  • Knowledge electrical safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the locations of city streets and meters.
  • Skill in basic mathematics.
  • Skill in the use of meter-testing equipment.
  • Skill in the use of various meter-reading equipment.
  • Skill in the use of computers.
  • Ability to successfully complete a Meterman Apprenticeship program.
  • Skill in operating a motor vehicle.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Ability to successfully complete certification training and become proficient in the use of applicable software and test equipment.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Gain necessary skills needed to operate such tools and equipment as chippers, chainsaws, backhoes, diggers, trenchers, line trucks and bucket trucks.
  • The employee must perform work in both a stockroom and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, high voltage and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as gloves, line hoses, hot sticks, hard hats and eye protection. The work can be made difficult by extreme weather conditions and working with energized conductors.
  • The employee must reside within 45 minutes of the headquarters and be able to be at the headquarters within 45 minutes of being called to report to work.

Supervisory controls include general instructions and spot-checks for accuracy and compliance with procedures.

Guidelines include the National Electrical Code, applicable building codes, and city departmental policies and procedures.

The work consists of related duties in reading electric meters, recording data, meter testing, and meter installation.

The purpose of this position is to test electrical meters and provide other energy-related services. Successful performance helps ensure public satisfaction with the handling of electric accounts.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, the general public, and other city employees.

Contacts are typically to give and exchange information and provide services.

The physical demands of the job require the employee to perform while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, crouching, stooping and bending. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb poles, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

The work is performed in an office, a warehouse and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves.
