City Attorney

We are seeking a City Attorney to serve as a strategic legal leader for a municipal government in a fast-paced local environment. This role advises elected officials, the executive leadership team, and department directors, and provides clear, ethical guidance across legal and policy matters. The City Attorney’s Office provides legal counsel and representation to the City Commission, City Manager, boards and commissions, and all municipal departments. Responsibilities will typically include overseeing municipal legal operations, supporting litigation matters, providing employment law guidance, and managing legal risk to protect the organization and strengthen decision-making. Required qualifications include a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, at least five years of experience as a practicing attorney, at least five years of supervisory experience, and prosecution experience. The candidate must be licensed to practice law in New Mexico, or be able to obtain licensure within six months, and be a member in good standing with the bar. Preferred qualifications include experience in municipal and employment law, experience advising governmental entities or public agencies, and strong courtroom, negotiation, and public presentation skills.
