Head Softball Coach Position Category: Staff (Exempt) FLSA: Exempt FTE: 1 Location: Thousand Oaks University Background: The mission of California Lutheran University is to educate leaders for a global society who are strong in character and judgment, confident in their identity and vocation, and committed to service and justice. Basic Function: Under the direction of the Athletic Director, support all functions of the administration of athletics. Assist in the development, programming and of policies and procedures. Oversee and supervise various athletic department operations and personnel. Represent the athletic department to various constituencies. Representative Duties Coaching/Student-Athlete experience: demonstrate knowledge of, and ability to develop, sport skills, strategies and philosophy; promotes student-athlete academic achievement/success, welfare and provides appropriate mentoring to student-athletes; demonstrates competitive success both in the University, SCIAC and NCAA leveland promotes positive sportsmanship; effectively communicates with student-athletes and assistant coach(es); Participates in professional development opportunities as available. Recruiting/retention: identifies prospective student-athletes who are able to qualify for admission to the University; effectively communicates with prospective student-athletes; effectively communicates and coordinates recruitment efforts with University' s Office of Admissions; maintains squad at or above University recommended number; retains the student-athletes in the University; retains the student-athletes on the team at an acceptable retention rate. Budget Management: develops annual budget plan in accordance with Department guidelines; effectively manages the fiscal resources of the program; manage budget expenditures according to the budget plan each year. Program Administration: operates within all University, SCIAC and NCAA Division III guidelines; oversees, manages and recruits for the operation of junior varsity team (if applicable); prepares and provides schedules to facilities scheduler and department for practice and competitions within established guidelines; maintains inventory of equipment, uniforms and supplies and purchases, within program resources, replacements as needed; coordinate all team travel and transportation needs according to established policies and procedures; effectively communicates within the Department and with University community on matters pertaining to program. Supervision: identifies, hires, trains and evaluates assistant coach(es), including volunteers and graduate assistances; ensure that assistant coach(es)/volunteer(s) adhere to University, SCIAC and NCAA Division III policies, procedures and rules. Program Leadership: serves as primary representative for Women's Softball to both campus and external constituencies; facilitate student-athlete participation in team-sponsored service events; hosts summer and/or other off-season camps/clinics; participates in University athletics and Victory Club events; actively work to secure Victory Club membership to generate additional funds as needed for program aspirations and budget augmentation; effectively communicates with all constituencies, including Department staff, other campus departments, alumni, parents and prospective student-athletes; participates in game management responsibilities and other duties as assigned. Contributes to the overall success of the intercollegiate athletics program by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Athletics. Successfully complete all those duties associated with being an NCAA Division III head softball coach including, but not limited to: coaching games and practices; recruiting and retaining athletes; budget management; travel arrangements and scheduling. Additional Responsibilities: fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned Knowledge Of NCAA and SCIAC rules and regulations. General knowledge about those sports most often sponsored by Division III colleges and Universities. Basic concepts of athletic administration. General principles of budget development and management. Oral and written communication skills. Softball rules and coaching strategies, techniques and tactics. Gender equity and Title IX issues and implications. Computer software programs and their implementation. Ability To Work well with a wide variety of constituents. Relate well to student-athletes, coach colleagues, faculty and administration. Prioritize and manage several unrelated jobs at the same time. Communicate effectively with all constituents. Analyze situations effectively, and quickly if need be, and adopt an effective course of action. Foster and maintain collaborative relationships. Work independently, when necessary, with little direction. Define realistic goals and objectives and prioritize them. Minimum Qualifications: Any combination equivalent to: bachelor's degree in exercise science, kinesiology, sports management, or related field and three years of softball coaching and athletic administrative experience. Preferred Qualifications: Masters Degree; Collegiate coaching experience. Licenses and Other Requirements Valid California driver's license. Possession of or ability to obtain CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), AED (automated external defibrillator) and FirstAid certifications within 90 days of employment. Ability to work flexible hours with frequent evenings and weekends is required. Travel is required. Physical Abilities: Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) and hear to exchange information; ability to walk, run, jump, stretch, stand, sit, bend, twist, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; climb stairs, ropes or ladders; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision; ability to demonstrate proper techniques and skills needed for athletic participation; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various sites to conduct work; ability to maintain level of physical fitness to meet departmental standards. Working Environment: Working environment includes both indoors and outdoors; exposure to various weather conditions, including temperature extremes; indoor work environment may not be air conditioned during hot weather; subject to vehicle operation to conduct work; travel is required; frequent weekend and evening hours is required.
