The Health Occupations Teacher (Health & Medical Sciences) will develop students' academic and clinical skills through academic courses and implement, monitor, and evaluate a quality competency‑based program using district‑approved curriculum. The teacher will document teaching and student progress, address specific educational needs, and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues at GW‑SMHS to ensure students meet college requirements. The Governor's Health Sciences Academy (GHSA) at Alexandria City High School is offered in partnership with The George Washington University‑School of Medicine & Health Sciences (GW‑SMHS). Students pursue one of seven health‑related pathways that lead to industry certification. All academy courses are taught for dual enrollment credit through GW‑SMHS, allowing students to graduate with 16‑18 college credits. Students may enter the workforce or pursue higher education after graduation. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree required in nursing, biology, chemistry, education, or related health and medical science field. Dual Enrollment courses will be taught. Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education Postgraduate License, with an endorsement in a related field, or Technical Professional License with Health and Medical Sciences endorsement preferred, or eligibility to obtain the License with the appropriate endorsement upon hiring. Experience: Job‑related experience within the specialized field, with increasing levels of responsibility. Essential Functions Develop and update lesson plans, course assignments and assessments in partnership with GW‑SMHS faculty based on the state Health and Medical Science curriculum. Facilitate clinical placement of students through collaboration with university and industry partners. Collaborate with administration to provide industry certification testing for students. Serve on a GHSA sub‑committee and attend bi‑annual meetings; participate in other sub‑committees where appropriate. Participate in GHSA recruiting events, promote the program to prospective students and parents, and attend at least one day of the Summer Bridge Program, compensated at the standard rate for this work. Review and develop curriculum during the summer, compensated at the standard rate for this work. Organize and participate in academy and career‑related activities such as industry speakers and field trips. Teach other foundation health and medical sciences classes where needed. Provide students opportunities to develop and apply leadership, social, civic, and health care skills through Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). Plan student assignments to meet academic objectives and accommodate different learning styles. Prepare written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student mastery. Demonstrate methods required to perform classroom and/or subject‑specific assignments to provide an effective program that addresses individual student requirements. Adapt classroom work to provide instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans. Administer developmental testing programs, subject‑specific assessments, etc. to assess student competency levels and develop individual learning plans. Participate in a variety of meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions. Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress, communicate expectations and achievements, and develop methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals at home. Promote communication with affiliating agency administration, staff, students, parents and clients. Counsel students to promote optimal participation and performance. Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment. Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain personal safety of students, provide a positive learning environment, and comply with Education Code and school policies. Maintain teacher certification as required by the Virginia Department of Education. Adhere to Alexandria City High School policies and regulations. Adhere to affiliating agencies policies and regulations. Maintain current industry‑related certifications required for the position. May perform additional duties or tasks as designated by supervisor. Compensation Step placement and salary for this position are determined by the ACPS Teachers and Other Licensed Staff Salary Scale.
