Ideal candidates will have at least 5+ years of optical retail, 3+ years supervising staff in an optical retail environment, and Certification by American Board of Opticianry.

The Lead Optician will be responsible for exceptional frame and lens selection, troubleshooting to resolve patient needs, serve as the day-to-day lead and primary resource. While providing staff guidance, coaching, onboarding, training, and reinforcing established procedures, quality, and customer service standards. Address routine workflow and staff concerns and escalate performance, disciplinary, or significant operational issues to management as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

• Provide exceptional patient service, assisting with frame and lens selection based on prescription, lifestyle, visual needs, and preferences
• Accurately interpret prescriptions, take optical measurements, and educate patients on lens materials, coatings, progressive and specialty lens options
• Fit, adjust, repair, verify, and dispense eyewear, ensuring accuracy, quality, and proper fit
• Troubleshoot and resolve patient concerns related to eyewear, vision, lens adaptation, or fit
• Serve as the day-to-day lead and primary resource for optical staff, coordinating workflow and supporting efficient department operations
• Provide staff guidance, coaching, onboarding, and training while reinforcing established procedures, quality, and customer service standards
• Address routine workflow and staff concerns and escalate performance, disciplinary, or significant operational issues to management as appropriate
• Monitor eyewear orders and work with laboratories and vendors to resolve order, quality, warranty, or service issues
• Assist with frame and product inventory, purchasing, inventory reconciliation, displays, and optical supply needs
• Ensure optical orders, documentation, charges, payments, discounts, insurance benefits, and patient responsibility are processed accurately
• Monitor optical performance, including sales, capture rate, average sale, remakes, returns, order accuracy, and product waste, and communicate trends to management
• Maintain compliance with HIPAA, organizational policies, quality standards, and applicable regulations while supporting department goals for quality, efficiency, revenue, and patient satisfaction
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent required
• Certification by American Board of Opticianry preferred
• NCLE preferred
• Experience with all types of lenses including soft, RGP, multi-focal, Toric and Keratoconus
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, staff, managers, and doctors
• Understanding eye anatomy as well as normal, abnormal vision and perception
• Basic computer literacy required
• Excellent math skills that allow for precise work related to opticianry and sales (basic algebraic equations and monetary calculations)
• Prefer 5+ years of optical retail
• Prefer 3+ years supervising staff in an optical retail environment.
• Proven sales experience
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience in a private optometry and/or ophthalmology practice preferred
• Knowledge of processing vision insurance claims is required
• Experience with EHR and EPM, NextGen preferred
• Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office
