Welders must have knowledge of welding techniques, procedures, and applications of welding equipment involving fabrication of ferrous and non‑ferrous components in a manufacturing facility. Fabricate components using proper techniques, procedures, specifications and detailed drawings. Welders must be proficient in the operation of GTAW, GMAW, SMAW and FCAW welding processes in all positions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Incorporate safety responsibilities and activities into daily action. Work safely following all standard welding safety practices while using appropriate protection from weld arcs, airborne dust, and fumes. Perform welds utilizing GTAW, GMAW, SMAW and FCAW processes based on applicable technical drawings, procedures and specifications. Pass a standardized welding test and maintain qualifications from a Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) for the welding process, material type, size and position being welded. Perform welding operations using the variables qualified under a company Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). Proficiency in welding on Mild steel, Chrome alloys, stainless steel, and Inconel. Proficiency in performing open root –pipe welds in all positions with all types of filler metals. Proficiently manipulate welds using pulse, short arc and spray modes. Perform weld applications that consistently pass all NDT (Nondestructive Testing) methods of testing that include mechanical and optical, penetrating radiation, electromagnetic, and ultrasonic. Ensure that proper weld wire, gasses, and materials are correct per the drawing or specification. Check interior and exterior surfaces of weld for visual defects during and after completion of the weld such as weld wire protrusion, cracks, undercuts, and lack of penetration, etc. Demonstrate knowledge of proper pre‑heat and interpass maintenance with the use of temperature indicating devices including but not limited to: temperature indicating crayons, surface temperature pyrometer, thermocouple, etc. Ensure that the finished weld is completed to the company welding and quality standards. Able to weld an open root butt weld with/without back purge in pipe sizes ranging from 1” OD to 72” OD. Uphold SPSI’s mission and values. Assume additional responsibilities as directed by Shop Supervision. Physical Requirements Visual acuity. The ability to see details of objects at a close range (within a few feet of the observer). The ability to see details at a distance. The ability to see objects or movement of objects to one's side when the eyes are focused forward. Ability to move freely throughout a manufacturing facility. Carrying and moving objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Ability to stand for long periods of time and to frequently stoop, crouch, kneel and perform other related physical activities. Able to work safely around welding arc, grinding dust, welding fumes, floor and overhead obstructions, etc. Knowledge and Skills Must have the ability to create and deposit acceptable welds per the code of fabrication. Knowledge should include welding principles including the prevention of welding defects and discontinuities. The welder should possess the skills necessary to make in and out of position welds on piping systems while maintaining a high quality standard. The welder should understand and utilize the proper handling techniques regarding weld cleanliness on carbon, stainless and high alloy steels. Knowledge of how to safely use shop provided tools including but not limited to: electric grinders, die grinders, fuel air heating torches, and overhead cranes. Education and Work Experience A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the field of high pressure pipe welding. Possess the skills needed to pass the following weld tests: 6G position GTAW Root/GMAW‑P fill and cover weld test in P‑1 carbon steel A high school education is required. Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. The duties of the pipefitter are to correctly assemble piping components based on a detailed drawing. This includes selecting the correct material, dimensions (both linear and angular), and observing stated specifications and tolerances. The duties of the pipefitter may also involve the welding of smaller joints including but not limited to socket welds, structural fillet welds, and tack welds. The pipefitter should be knowledgeable in basic mathematics, geometry, trigonometry, and general pipefitting techniques. Ability to tack and weld using the GTAW process is required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities – Pipefitter Incorporate safety responsibilities and activities into daily action. Assemble and secure pipe system layout, installation, or repair according to specifications and tolerances. Cut pipe to specifications, using tools such as cutting torches and cut off wheels. Verify, lay out, and mark all penetration locations, rolls, elevations, etc. before making cuts, burning or drilling holes. Lay out full scale drawings of pipe systems, supports, and related equipment following blueprints. Proficiency in oxy‑fuel set‑up, adjustment and regulate tanks, hoses and torches. Assure proper filler metal is used for tacks per shop drawing. Assure proper preheat temperature is used per shop drawing. Use proper tacking techniques for joint (consumable tack, bridge tack, etc.) Follow standard shop practices for pipefitting. This will include correctly transferring material markings to maintain material traceability. Install any necessary kickers, strongbacks, or other shop required supports necessary for safely handling and fabricating pipe systems. Evaluate drawing for correct fitting sequence. Clean out pipe and fittings of debris (e.g., burning flash/slag, rocks, burnout slugs, drill shavings, etc.). Uphold SPSI’s mission and values. Knowledge and Skills – Pipefitter Must be certified in GTAW process (company standardized tack test). Knowledge of how to safely use shop provided tools including but not limited to: electric grinders, die grinders, fuel air heating torches, oxy fuel cutting torches, plasma cutters, overhead cranes, jib cranes, etc. Ability to proficiently apply practical and theoretical knowledge of fitting techniques and materials processing in a manufacturing environment. Butt‑weld, socket weld, threaded weld, valve, nipple, couplets, branchettes, nozzles, elbows, crosses, laterals, and flanged fitting experience is required. Knowledge of design techniques, principles, tools and instruments involved in the production and use of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words. Ability to read and understand detailed drawings and specifications. Practical application of engineering technology including applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of process piping. Ability to correctly read a piping isometric blueprint with complex dimensional details is required. Must be proficient in trade math related to pipefitting. Must be able to identify different grades of piping and classifications of fittings. Must have basic knowledge of computers. Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques used in the pipefitting trade is required. Education and Work Experience – Pipefitter Minimum of One (1) year pipefitting experience. Must pass pipefitters written exam and a 2” Schedule 80, 6G GTAW weld test. A high school diploma is required. High school courses in mathematics, physics, and mechanical drawing are recommended. Shop courses that include welding and principles of electricity are also helpful. Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
