The Division of Intramural Research, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), located in Bethesda, MD, is seeking a Senior Clinician (High Scarcity – HS), Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon to serve as the Chief of the Sinonasal and Olfaction Program (SOP). The Sinonasal and Olfaction Program is a multi-specialty team with broad thinking, background, and training seeking to translate emerging basic science discoveries into impactful advances in patient care. Specific emphases include point-of-care diagnostics, chemosensory dysfunction, and the role of eicosanoids in chronic upper airway inflammation in Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) and other forms of nasal polyps.

The NIDCD clinical research mission areas include normal function and disorders affecting hearing, balance, paranasal sinuses, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language. The SOP conducts basic, pre-clinical, and clinical research on causes of acquired smell and taste dysfunction, including chronic rhinosinusitis and other forms of chronic upper airway inflammation. Join us in advancing the field of upper airway and olfactory research through groundbreaking projects, including:

1. Efficacy of Type-2 Targeted Biologics: Preventing nasal polyp recurrence following endoscopic sinus surgery for allergic fungal sinusitis (AFRS) and other recalcitrant sinusitis forms.
2. Eicosanoid Production and Chronic Airway Inflammation: Investigating the link between eicosanoids and persistent airway inflammation.
3. Mapping Central Olfactory Pathways: Utilizing advanced neuroimaging to understand olfactory pathways in health and disease.
4. Novel Point-of-Care Diagnostics: Developing innovative diagnostics for chronic upper airway diseases.
5. Preclinical Olfactory Implants: Validating implants designed to restore the sense of smell.

We welcome applications from candidates with clinical research interests in disorders affecting NIDCD's mission areas of research. Preference will be given to candidates whose approaches complement those of our existing programs in clinical and translational research in hearing, smell, and taste.

Qualifications:

• Candidates must possess an M.D. and be board-certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
• A record of scholarly clinical publications and evidence of national recognition.
• A teaching and/or leading clinical education or training program record.

Salary is commensurate with training and relevant research experience.
