Definition Under the general direction and supervision of the Nikiski Fire Service Area (NFSA) Fire Chief or their designee, the Senior Captain is responsible for responding to all fire and emergency medical services related issues for the Nikiski Fire Service Area. The Senior Captain is the shift commander which supervises personnel and station activities on an assigned 24-hour shift for multiple station locations. The Senior Captain performs and supervises emergency procedures to preserve and maintain life and property. Residency: The Sr. Captain must reside within the boundaries set forth by the Nikiski Fire Service Area Chief. Minimum Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or GED Work Experience: Seven (7) years of full-time structural firefighting experience, one (1) of which must be as a Captain within the Kenai Peninsula Borough Certifications and Licensing: Valid, Unrestricted Alaska Driver's License IFSAC or State of Alaska Fire Officer 1 Alaska Fire Officer 2 obtained within 18 months of appointment Alaska AEMT, or Alaska Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic. Alaska Fire Investigator Technician obtained within 12 months of appointment Incident Command 100, 200, 700, 800 Incident Command 300, 400 obtained within 18 months of appointment Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications: College degree in Fire or EMS-related field Essential Functions Coordinates and directs the activities of 56-hour employees and volunteers on an assigned shift or assigned activity. Responsible for stations, apparatus, equipment, routine maintenance, and prepares written reports to request needed repairs and/or replacements as needed. Directs fire and emergency services scene operations, unless relieved by a higher authority. Recalls personnel (full-time and volunteers) and equipment as necessary. May invoke, or respond to, mutual and auto-aid requests. Reports to the Training and/or EMS Officer for EMS, training, safety, and fire prevention matters dealing with their respective functional areas per the chain of command. Responsible for the preparation of employee performance evaluations and employee discussion records for employees under their direct supervision. Responsible for the timely input, compilation, and accuracy of related NFIRS and EMS records and reports. Prepares, delivers, and assists with departmental training, and directly supervises and monitors training of all members assigned to their shift. Performs and delivers fire safety education and injury prevention programs, conducts pre-fire plans, and inspections as assigned. Serves as a member of the management team in the development of policies and standard operating guidelines. Assists with other assigned functions of the management team. Represents the department at community events, governmental functions, and with other agencies as assigned. Accepts and completes special assignments. Additional Functions: The Sr. Captain acts as a mid-level manager for the department, and supports all established policies, guidelines, and administrative directives while exercising fiscal responsibility in all of their actions. If qualified to receive incentive pay, maintains required certifications and attends required training. Fills in for Chief Officers as assigned. Hires replacement personnel for shift assignments per departmental policy. Other duties as assigned.
