Area Chief of Staff Veterinarian

Job Overview Banfield Pet Hospital Area Chief of Staff is responsible for leading, developing, and managing associate veterinarians in their hospitals to ensure quality care and meet performance measures. The role drives the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) and aligns every pet’s care with Banfield’s six domains of quality: safe, effective, patient/client‑centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care. Essential Responsibilities and Tasks Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as responsible veterinarian for veterinary and pharmacy board permits, as required by federal, state, or local law, and manage the controlled substance inventory for relief doctors. Own doctor engagement and retention by consistently assessing risk, ensuring a proactive retention strategy, and creating a culture of community and engagement. Provide effective medical leadership to hospital teams by driving an inclusive and collaborative work environment in partnership with practice managers. Validate the clinical skillset and alignment with quality standards of doctors, veterinary assistants, and veterinary technicians through medical record reviews, quality assignments, audits, and patient‑safety event reviews. Provide veterinary services; time spent in clinical roles varies by hospital number, direct reports, and productivity and is determined in partnership with the DVQ. Oversee the coaching program for newly hired veterinarians, ensuring an engaging experience that results in a productive doctor knowledgeable in Banfield quality standards, Optimum Wellness Plans, processes, and workflows. Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent and serve as a brand ambassador in the local veterinary community. Work with associate doctors to ensure they have the skills to achieve productivity goals through high‑quality medicine and a focus on preventive care. Deliver veterinary operations KPIs of assigned hospitals through leadership and partnership with practice managers; develop, execute, and revise plans to achieve targeted KPIs and OGSM performance. Develop a veterinary leadership talent bench and maintain a succession plan for the assigned hospital pod. Ensure compliance with Banfield’s clinical essentials, government regulations, and veterinary industry standards through quality assessments, record reviews, audits, and patient‑safety event reviews. Resolve identified gaps promptly. Champion a preventive‑care culture by communicating, demonstrating, and validating behaviors that drive optimum wellness‑plan growth and retention. Create a “say yes” culture by driving access to care and superior client service, meeting or exceeding client‑experience scorecard goals, and resolving client complaints related to medical standard of care in a timely manner. Manage medical equipment inventory and new equipment requests in partnership with the Director of Veterinary Quality. Deliver the highest level of veterinary care to every pet in a professional and ethical manner while ensuring an exceptional client experience. Establish trust and client confidence by delivering appropriate preventive care, performing complete diagnostic work‑ups, developing thorough treatment plans, communicating home‑care instructions, and planning follow‑up visits. Tolerance for stress / resiliency; maintains a positive outlook and composure under stress. Special Working Conditions Work at a computer for long periods. Project timelines may require more than 40 hours per week. Requires mental processes for reasoning, memory, mathematics, and language (reading, writing, speaking English). Must follow instructions in written, oral, or diagram form and solve problems involving several variables. Requires sufficient ambulatory skills to perform duties while at hospital. Ability to lift, carry, move up to 50 pounds. Requires good hand‑eye coordination, dexterity, and vision to use keyboard and operating equipment. Noise level in work environment is moderately high. Exposure to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch; occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances. Some travel required for vendor visits, associate education, and assistance to other area hospitals. Certifications and Licensing Candidate must obtain state-controlled substance and federal DEA certification within 3 months of employment. Accredited by USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, National Veterinary Accreditation Program within 3 months of employment. Education and Experience Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree. Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with all applicable state veterinary boards for assigned hospitals. At least 3 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice.
