CFO/Controller

We are hiring for an established structural concrete and masonry subcontractor with approximately $60-$80 million in annual revenue. We are seeking an experienced CFO / Controller & Office Operations Executive to assume overall responsibility for the company's financial, accounting, and administrative operations. This is not intended to be a traditional accounting-only CFO position. We are looking for a hands-on senior executive who can run the financial side of the business while also overseeing the day-to-day operation, organization, accountability, and performance of our office. The company has approximately 10-15 office employees, including accounting/finance personnel, project managers, purchasing personnel, and administrative staff. The successful candidate should have significant experience in the construction industry, ideally with a general contractor, concrete/masonry subcontractor, structural subcontractor, or other large specialty trade contractor. This individual will work closely with ownership and will be expected to bring structure, financial discipline, accountability, and strong operational leadership to the organization. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - FINANCIAL LEADERSHIP & ACCOUNTING Direct and oversee all accounting and financial operations of the company. Manage and develop the accounting and finance team. Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closing processes. Produce timely and accurate financial statements and management reports. Maintain and improve internal accounting controls, policies, and procedures. Manage cash flow and prepare short- and long-term cash-flow forecasts. Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, banking, and treasury functions. Maintain relationships with banks, bonding companies, insurance brokers, CPAs, and other financial partners. Coordinate annual financial reviews/audits and tax planning with outside CPAs. Oversee annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning. Provide ownership with clear financial reporting and analysis to support business decisions. CONSTRUCTION FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT The candidate must understand the financial mechanics of a construction company and be comfortable working with job costing, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, contract revenue recognition, cost-to-complete forecasting, project budgets, committed costs, change orders, retainage, underbillings and overbillings, accounts receivable and collections, labor and equipment costs, subcontractor/vendor commitments, project profitability, bonding, and insurance requirements. The CFO/Controller will work closely with Project Managers to ensure project financial information is accurate and potential problems are identified early. PROJECT FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE Review job-cost reports and WIP schedules with Project Managers. Compare actual project performance against original and revised budgets. Identify projects experiencing margin erosion or cost overruns. Challenge unrealistic cost-to-complete projections when necessary. Monitor change-order exposure and unapproved change orders. Monitor billing, collections, retainage, and project cash flow. Develop systems that provide ownership with early warning of financial issues on individual projects. Hold Project Managers accountable for accurate forecasting and financial performance. PURCHASING & COST CONTROLS Provide executive oversight of the purchasing function. Establish controls and procedures for purchase orders and vendor commitments. Monitor major material purchases and pricing. Improve coordination between purchasing, accounting, project management, and field operations. Ensure purchasing commitments are accurately reflected in job-cost and project forecasting systems. Identify opportunities to improve purchasing efficiency and company-wide cost control. OFFICE & ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP In addition to leading finance and accounting, this position will serve as the senior executive responsible for the company's office operations. Oversee the day-to-day functioning of the office and provide leadership to approximately 10-15 office employees. Establish clear responsibilities, reporting structures, and accountability. Develop and enforce office policies, procedures, and workflows. Conduct or oversee employee performance evaluations. Identify staffing needs and participate in hiring, compensation, promotions, and terminations. Improve communication and coordination between accounting, purchasing, project management, and ownership. Establish measurable KPIs for key office functions. Ensure employees are meeting deadlines and fulfilling their responsibilities. Identify inefficient processes and implement improvements. Help create a professional, organized, accountable, and performance-oriented office culture. MANAGEMENT REPORTING & KPIs The CFO/Controller will develop a concise management reporting package for ownership that provides visibility into the health of the company, including revenue and gross profit, gross margin by project, backlog and projected backlog profitability, WIP, cash position and cash-flow forecast, AR aging and collections, AP, underbillings/overbillings, change-order exposure, projected final margins, labor productivity and cost trends, overhead expenses, and budget-to-actual performance. The goal is to provide ownership with accurate, actionable information rather than simply historical accounting reports. SYSTEMS & PROCESS IMPROVEMENT Evaluate existing accounting, project management, purchasing, payroll, and reporting systems. Improve integration and information flow between departments. Reduce dependence on manual spreadsheets and redundant processes where practical. Establish standardized procedures for project setup, purchasing, job costing, billing, forecasting, and project closeout. Implement appropriate internal controls without creating unnecessary bureaucracy. Identify opportunities to use technology and automation to improve efficiency and reporting. LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS Hands-on and willing to get into the details when necessary. Highly organized and process-oriented. Financially sophisticated but operationally practical. Comfortable holding employees and managers accountable. Able to identify problems and propose solutions without waiting for ownership to direct every decision. Confident working with strong personalities in a construction environment. Able to communicate effectively with ownership, Project Managers, accounting personnel, field leadership, vendors, banks, bonding companies, and outside professionals. Capable of developing employees and building a stronger management structure as the company grows. Comfortable working in an entrepreneurial, privately held business where decisions are made quickly. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE Minimum 10+ years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience, with significant construction experience strongly preferred. Prior experience as a CFO, Controller, VP of Finance, Director of Finance, or similar senior financial position. Strong understanding of construction accounting, job costing, WIP schedules, construction forecasting, and percentage-of-completion accounting. Experience managing accounting/finance personnel and improving financial controls, processes, and reporting. Experience interacting with banks, bonding companies, insurance providers, CPAs, and other outside professionals. Strong Excel and financial-analysis capabilities.
