Job Summary


Under general supervision, the Housekeeper performs routine custodial duties in residential facilities, including cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining assigned areas. This position follows established schedules and safety procedures and works independently while communicating with the Housekeeping Supervisor. The role requires reliability, attention to detail, and timely reporting of any facility issues.

NOTE: This is a temporary (3-month) position beginning in late May and ending in late August.

Essential Duties

Housing Facilities Operations and Custodial Services

• Perform routine and project-based custodial cleaning in residence halls, including occupied and vacant rooms, restrooms, and common areas.
• Clean and sanitize high-touch surfaces following established infection prevention practices.
• Support seasonal and special cleaning needs, including summer turnover, conferences, events, and occasional weekend coverage.
• Maintain assigned areas to departmental cleanliness and appearance standards.
• Assist with basic furniture movement, room setups, and takedowns as assigned.

Equipment, Chemicals, and Safety

• Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, auto scrubbers, and carpet extractors.
• Use cleaning and disinfecting chemicals according to instructions, SDS guidelines, and safety requirements.
• Wear required PPE and follow established safety practices.
• Keep custodial equipment, storage areas, and workspaces clean and organized.
• Report safety concerns, hazards, or equipment issues to the supervisor.

Work Execution and Communication

• Follow written and verbal work instructions, schedules, and procedures.
• Communicate work progress, issues, and needs with the Housekeeping Supervisor.
• Provide courteous and professional service to students, staff, and campus partners.
• Maintain reliable attendance, effective time management, and flexibility to meet operational needs.

Administrative and Reporting Support

• Complete assigned work orders and basic cleaning documentation as required.
• Maintain adequate supplies in assigned areas and notify the supervisor when replenishment is needed.
• Observe and report maintenance, security, or safety issues encountered during custodial duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Working knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, sanitation practices, and safety protocols
• Ability to perform routine and specialty cleaning tasks with attention to detail
• Ability to operate custodial equipment safely and effectively
• Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication within a team environment
• Strong sense of personal responsibility, pride in workmanship, and respect for the residential community
• Basic documentation and record-keeping skills
• Strong reliability, time management, and adaptability

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the position

Preferred Qualifications

• One (1) year or more of custodial, housekeeping, or related experience
• Experience in a campus, residential, or customer-facing environment
• Familiarity with infection-prevention or institutional cleaning practices

Physical Requirements

• Regular standing and walking for extended periods
• Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling
• Ability to lift, carry, or move items weighing up to 50 pounds, with occasional heavier loads with assistance
• Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, bodily fluids, and varied indoor temperatures
• Work may occur during evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency situations as operational needs require
