Phlebotomist

Job Description Phlebotomist is responsible for accurate collection and handling of patient laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing according to established best practice in a manner that enhances patient and caregiver engagement. Essential Functions Accurately collect patient specimens for diagnostic testing while working in a professional medical environment. This position functions as part of a dynamic and engaging team with a workload ranging from fast‑paced hospital settings to high/low volume clinics. Perform specimen collection using techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections. Collect specimens from patients of various acuities, including outpatient, emergency department, inpatient (newborns, ICU, and other hospital areas). Adhere to personal protective equipment requirements in inpatient and outpatient settings, including gowns, gloves, lab coats, face shields, and masks. Communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members, demonstrating empathy in every interaction. Opportunities for growth include: patient or client registrations, participation in code‑response teams, training as a clinical coach or preceptor, specimen processing (send‑out, resulting, or referral testing), participation in special projects, quality assurance processes, waived testing, technical writing, downtime planning, continuous improvement projects, and other laboratory responsibilities as required by site or assigned by the team or department leader. Apply organizational skills and navigate multiple computer systems, work well as a team member, and maintain a clean and safe work environment. Resilience and the ability to manage stressful situations professionally are required. Take on‑call shifts and participate in holiday rotations, according to department or facility needs. Perform advanced collection and troubleshooting techniques such as bilateral nares or non‑standard kit collection. Twelve months of phlebotomy experience, phlebotomy training, or national certification approved by the manager/supervisor (preferred). Physical Requirements Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors requiring verbal communication and listening in emergency situations. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate delicate equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use and typing for documentation. Lifting and moving patients and supplies, bending to retrieve, lift, and carry items up to heavy weights. Walking, assisting with transporting/ambulating patients, and distributed supplies and equipment, including pushing or pulling gurneys and portable equipment. Standing in a stationary position for extended periods. When driving: ability to sit, see, read signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
