Job Summary :  The Orthopedic Technician assists the care team in the clinic setting and works under the supervision of orthopedic providers. The Orthopedic Technician will assist providers in the treatment and care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Responsibilities include applying and removing casts, splints, and braces, assisting in procedures, and educating patients.

Job   Relationships :

1. Directly responsible to Specialty Care Practice Manager or designee;
2. Works closely with Orthopedic providers, and other hospital departments 

 

Occupational Hazards:

 

Works in the general clinic setting. May be exposed to blood, body fluids, or tissues as well as patients in varying stages of infectious states. 

Samples of Duties:

• Assist provider with documentation in patient medical record, including obtaining past medical history and other pertinent histories;
• Liaise between orthopedic providers, patients, ancillary service providers as needed to coordinate timely access to care;
• Responsible for ordering supplies for orthopedic clinic, includes maintaining DME inventory as needed;
• Maintain clinic flow in partnership with providers and other clinic staff; includes obtaining patient vital signs, queueing orders for providers, documenting in medical record;
• Carry out treatment plans as ordered by provider;
• Set up for and assist with clinic procedures, provide patient education as appropriate;
• Coordinate with surgery team, authorization team, rehabilitation team to ensure comprehensive, multidisciplinary patient care;
• Fabricate, adjust, and remove orthopedic devices (including braces, splints, casts);
• Coordinates completion of patient forms, including disability and other forms;
• Performs phlebotomy

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of:

• The Mission, Vision, and Values of Northern Inyo Healthcare District;
• NIHD policies and procedures, including Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and Confidentiality standards;
• NIHD safety policies and procedures, including the Rainbow Chart, Employee Health, and Infection Prevention standards;
• General orthopedic care;

 

Skills/Abilities to:

• Provide direct patient care in accordance with Orthopedic Technician scope of practice;
• Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with NIHD staff and patients ;
• Develop and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, and good judgement;
• Taping/fitting durable medical equipment, apply wound dressings, suture removal, casting, splinting.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Experience:  Minimum 1 year experience as a certified ortho tech, working in orthopedic clinic setting

 

Education: 

Certification: Orthopedic Technician certification
