POLICE OFFICER

Position Summary Under general supervision serves as a commissioned law enforcement officer responsible for the protection, safety, and welfare of students, staff, and visitors and all University owned and operated property. Compensation Certification Pay: Intermediate $1,200 annually; Advanced $2,400 annually; Master $4,800 annually Tuition reimbursement: up to 6 hours per semester at Texas Southern University; minimum passing grade of “C” and a GPA of 2.0 required. Years of Service: $6,000 (0‑3 years), $9,000 (4‑9 years), $12,000 (10 years or more) based on total police experience (excluding corrections, armed security, military police). Job Responsibilities Monitors campus buildings, parking lots, and garages for criminal activity. Maintains readiness for emergency and routine calls for service. Educates the campus community on emergency and safety prevention techniques. Enforces all Federal, Local and State laws. Conduct daily and periodic patrols by foot, bicycle, electric powered golf carts or patrol vehicles to preserve peace, enforce laws, prevent and detect crime, respond to all complaints, and complete police reports. Provides essential services under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team during campus emergencies. Enforces state laws, files proper charges, and documents with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Responds to dispatch calls regarding service, accidents, disturbances, crime, distress, or illness and provides information, assistance, and service to students, staff, and the public. Investigates illegal or suspicious activities, collects and preserves evidence, protects crime scenes, and reports all facts of incidents. Work campus events, special events, and university-sponsored events. Controls and directs traffic to enforce University parking regulations and departmental towing policies. Mediates and resolves conflicts involving students, department personnel, and community members. Provides escort service as needed and assists state, county, and city law enforcement authorities upon request. Conducts crime prevention programs and presentations for faculty, staff, students, and the surrounding community. Testifies at administrative hearings and in court to present evidence and describe conditions, situations, and actions of individuals for a case. Performs other job‑related duties as assigned. Hiring Range Full‑time, 1.0 FTE — $26.46 to $33.74 per hour. Education High School diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent, with specialized or technical training. Required Licensing / Certification Licensed as a Texas peace officer through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement enrolled BPOC Valid Texas Driver’s License Basic Peace Officer’s Certification Medical Examination Psychological Examination Successful completion of the Field Training Program (FTO) Auto Insurance No Criminal Charges Able to obtain security clearance Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of policies, procedures, and practices; job function discipline; applicable laws; safety guidelines; Microsoft Office; and job‑related applications. Skills in leading projects, problem‑solving, decision‑making, multitasking, time management, and both verbal and written communication. Ability to analyze and interpret data and work independently. Work Experience No prior work experience is required but preferred. Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure (communications systems, computer networks, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system) is required. Work Environment Requires reaching, grasping, running, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Use of video display terminals and manual dexterity. Communicates information orally and in written form; proofreads documents for accuracy. Involves strenuous physical activities with continuous exposure to hazardous substances and potentially dangerous situations, including adverse weather conditions and extreme risk of accident or ill health.
