TEACHER (HIGH SCHOOL-PHYSICAL EDUCATION) (CORRECTIONAL FACILITY) Job Description And Duties This advertisement is for Teacher (High School - Physical Education) positions located at Sierra Conservation Center in Jamestown, Tuolumne County. Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Correctional Education Program (SCEP) and the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Academic Instruction (SAI), the Physical Education Teacher (coach) shall work closely with institution staff and inmates in developing and implementing a recreation program to meet institutional and inmate needs and in evaluating the program's effectiveness. This position provides planning, organization, and supervision of the Recreation/Physical Education Program of the Institution. The teacher shall develop a course outline for the program, including specific recreational activities that the inmates may engage in on a monthly basis. The major portion of the teacher’s time shall be devoted to individual and group instruction of inmates. This instruction shall cover a wide variety of recreational rules and regulations. The teacher shall give instruction to small and large groups while supervising inmate activities in the gymnasium or in the outdoor recreational area. The teacher will establish realistic goals/activities based on inmate needs/interests using inmate input. The goal is self-directed learning of the inmate. The teacher's tasks include planning, assigning, and supervising work; maintaining control and discipline; controlling all material and equipment; preparing instruction; participating in program evaluations; preventing escapes and injury by inmates to themselves or others or to property; inspecting premises and searching students for contraband; conduct fitness testing; and performing such ancillary duties as required. Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s). Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented. PLP 2025 requires that each full-time employee receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 30, 2027. Working Conditions About this location -- Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) is located in the foothills near Jamestown, California, in the heart of the Mother Lode Gold Country. It is adjacent to the Stanislaus National Forest, offering pine trees, mountain streams, and an abundance of recreational activities (fishing, swimming, camping, skiing, golfing, etc.). The prison is approximately 70 miles from Yosemite National Park. The primary mission of SCC is to provide housing, programs and services for minimum and medium custody incarcerated individuals, to aid in their rehabilitation. SCC is responsible for the training and placement of male incarcerated individuals in the Conservation Camp Program. SCC administers male camps located throughout California. Desirable Qualifications Knowledge of: Principles and methods of teaching in order to provide a variety of instructional programs or courses to adult incarcerated person students in a correctional setting. Principles of educational psychology as applied to teaching to provide a positive learning environment, motivate incarcerated person students, identify special educational needs, and to communicate with other CDC professional staff. Current trends in educational methods in order to implement programs, provides educational services, and enhances classroom instruction. Remedial teaching techniques and adapting instruction to incarcerated person students’ deficiencies to fully participate equitably in an educational program, ensure program success, and to provide classroom intervention/support in order for the incarcerated person students to fulfill their educational goals. Emotional problems of incarcerated person students in a state correctional facilities to develop incarcerated person students’ self-esteem, a personalized approach to learning, connection to the learning environment, and to make medical referrals if needed. Skill to: Provide leadership and motivation to incarcerated person students to improve their academic achievements, sense of responsibility, decision making ability, and accountability. Teach incarcerated person students to develop academic goals and objectives, evaluate learning, and to achieve instructional competencies. Work effectively with other subject matter experts to teach techniques that enhance the active involvement of incarcerated person students appropriate to a variety of subject matter materials. Gain the interest, respect, and cooperation of incarcerated person students to the degree with specific teaching methods to demonstrate an atmosphere that is fair, firm, and consistent in a classroom setting.
