Description:
The Surgical Technologist 1 functions in the inter-operative phase of patient care.
This role expedites surgical procedures under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse.
The position assists the surgical team through the use of equipment and instrumentation to ensure a safe operating room environment.
It is essential that required equipment is available and functioning properly.


Discussion of any special needs with the surgeon before surgery is required.
Scrubbing in for surgery must occur in a timely manner for proper preparation of instruments.
The operative site should be prepared by aseptically cleaning and patient clipping as needed.
Instrument tables must be prepared and maintained in an organized manner to avoid damage and incorrect counts.
Identifying damaged or incomplete trays and rectifying discrepancies immediately is necessary to avoid delays or injury.


The operating room setup must align with surgical procedure schedules.
There should be a careful selection of required supplies that are only opened as needed.
Proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies during procedures must be ensured.
Surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items should be performed according to established policies.
Anticipating the needs of the surgeon and surgical team staff is critical.


Sterile supplies and equipment must be passed to surgeons and assistants during procedures.
Holding retractor devices and responding to the surgical team's needs during the course of surgery is expected.
Assisting with the draping and positioning of the patient is part of the role.
Receiving surgical specimens following the appropriate protocol is required.
Verification of the source of specimens is necessary when passing them off the sterile field.


Assistance with placement of surgical dressings at the operative site is expected after case completion.
Disassembling surgical instrumentation at the end of the procedure is required.
Proper transportation of soiled instrumentation to the decontamination area must be ensured.
Cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, and maintenance of surgical instruments should be overseen.
The operating room must be cleaned following each case, with equipment returned to appropriate storage areas.


Compliance with infection control policies, regulatory sterilization standards, and guidelines is necessary.
Familiarity with all equipment and instrumentation before patient use is essential.
Knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures is important for assisting the surgical team.
Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are required to interact with team members.
There may be occasional exposure to chemical or radiation hazards in this role.
