Qualifications 21 years of age as of September 24, 2026; Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain and maintain a City of Hoover Driver's Permit; U.S. Citizen; Ability to pass a background check; High School Diploma or GED PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to read, write and converse in Spanish Responsibilities Performs a variety of law enforcement duties in the preservation of public peace and prevention of crimes, including protecting life and property, enforcing all laws and ordinances, investigating crimes and accidents, making arrests, providing credible testimony in various courts, conducting traffic surveys to determine problem areas, assisting in school and community functions, as well as, public relations activities, and other cases as assigned. Supplemental Information EMPLOYMENT PROCESS: In order to be eligible for employment with the Hoover Police Department a candidate must successfully complete the Physical Agilities/Abilities Test. STEP 1 Police Officer Physical Abilities/Agilities Test: Qualified applicants will be required to attend the Physical Agilities test on Friday, October 2, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. STEP 2 Police Officer Written Examination: Applicants who pass the Physical Agilities Test will be scheduled to participate in a written examination the same day, scheduled for Friday, October 2, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. Here is the link to the PO-EL study guide: PO-EL Study Guide (Online) – Public Safety Compass This Guide should help you prepare for the examination. APOST Certification: Qualified candidates must successfully complete APOST minimum standards, or attain APOST certification, within six months from date of employment with the City of Hoover Police Department. Police Officer candidates who meet the minimum requirements and achieve a passing score on the written examination and physical agilities/abilities test will be further screened through our evaluation process, which considers related work experience, education, certifications and special training.
