Clinical Laboratory Scientist I

Job Summary and Responsibilities

Job Duties:

1. Performs and reports waived, moderate-complexity, and high-complexity laboratory testing on

patient specimens in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures to ensure accurate and timely

results.

1. Correlates clinical results, identifies patterns of bias, and promptly notifies appropriate caregivers of

critical values within established turnaround times.

1. Ensures proper operation of major automated laboratory equipment by performing required

maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting, including coordinating with instrument vendors for

technical support or repairs.

1. Performs and documents all required calibration and quality control procedures to ensure testing

remains within established performance parameters.

1. Completes assigned proficiency testing and reviews results with laboratory leadership to maintain

compliance and testing accuracy.

1. Assists in the evaluation, validation, and documentation of new laboratory procedures and

equipment to support implementation of updated testing technologies.

1. Participates in continuing education, teaching, and training activities to maintain and enhance

technical skills and support the development of students and coworkers, and monitors laboratory

supply inventory, including assisting with ordering and stocking materials.

Job Requirements

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or closely related.

The employer will accept a foreign equivalent degree if it is in the same field.

Experience Requirements:

24 months in the job offered, Medical Technologist, Medical Technologist I (Generalist), or closely

related.

Special skills requirements:

1. Experience working in different sections of the Laboratory such as Serology, Blood Bank,

Phlebotomy/Information, Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microscopy (Parasitology/

Urinalysis), and Microbiology.

1. Experience with collecting blood, receiving urine, stool, and other specimens, and processing them

with proper adherence to quality assurance programs of the laboratory.

1. Experience with examining secretions and excretions of the human body by various electronic,

chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, hematological, serologic, and immunologic procedures and

techniques, either manual or automated.

1. Experience with evaluating and performing corrective actions using Quality Control specimens on

various clinical instruments.

1. Experience with operating the following laboratory equipment: Mindray BS-380, Mindray BS-230,

Mindray BC3000PLUS, Mindray BC 6800, SNIBE Maglumi 800, BioMerieux MiniVidas, and laboratory

information systems.

1. Must have a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Generalist) License from the California Department of

Public Health.

1. Must have a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or International Medical Laboratory Scientist (IMLS)

Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Pay Range

$48.1813 - $74.0487 /hour
