Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory)

Job Description and Duties

Are you interested in working in a fast-paced, public-facing role to protect California's natural resources, recreation, and water supply from golden mussel? Then the Fisheries Branch Invasive Species Program wants YOU! The Program is currently expanding its dynamic, interdisciplinary office, field, and laboratory team to prevent the further spread of golden mussel and minimize their impacts to the environment, economy, infrastructure, and human health.

This Senior Environmental Scientist supervisor leads invasive mussel prevention and control efforts statewide. The incumbent will supervise staff, oversee invasive mussel prevention and control operations, enforcement of laws and regulations to prevent the spread of invasive mussels, and manage federal and state grants. This position collaborates internally with other Department of Fish and Wildlife programs, and externally with other state, federal, and local agencies and the general public.

This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.

Working Conditions

• This position requires working in the field 50% of the time and in a large office in a cubicle 50% of the time.

• Field work requires working on and around boats and waterbodies, walking, sitting, standing, bending, crouching, and reaching for several hours each day year-round in variable environmental conditions.

• The operation of high-pressure hot water pressure washers, driving full-size trucks, towing trailers, and completing repetitive tasks.

• Office work requires working in a large office building within a cubicle, operating a computer for several hour per day and participating in in-person and online meetings.

• This position requires wearing a Department uniform.

Special Requirements

50% of the time is spent in the field where work requires communicating with the public, working on and around boats and waterbodies, walking, sitting, standing, bending, crouching, and reaching for several hours each day.
