Test Engineer

Position Title: Test Engineer
Location: Hybrid – 2 days a week in Arlington, VA office

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Test Engineer you will support a program for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that supports systems and applications for veteran benefits by designing, developing, and executing test cases and where applicable, automated test scripts that ensure the quality, reliability, and performance of mission‑critical applications. In this role you will work closely with developers, business analysts, QA leads, and VA stakeholders to validate functionality, maintain compliance with VA/Federal standards, and support delivery through a combination of manual testing and automation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform manual testing, including test case design, execution, integration, ad-hoc, smoke, E2E testing for full coverage of the requirements
• Develop and execute test scripts for functional, regression, integration, API, 508 compliance, and performance testing
• Perform backend API testing and validation using Swagger UI and POSTMAN, SOAP UI, including request/ response verification, schema validation, and automated collection runs
• Leverage Tricentis Tosca (or equivalent model-based test automation tools) to design, execute, and maintain scriptless /low-code automated test cases where applicable
• Perform backend and SQL database testing, including data validation, query verification, and back-end data integrity checks using Oracle SQL Developer, TOAD, or similar tools
• Develop, maintain, and enhance automated test frameworks using tools such as Selenium, Tricentis Tosca, Postman, or similar, as needed to support test coverage
• Collaborate with testers and developers to identify test scenarios, debug issues, and ensure testability of new features
• Analyze test results, document defects, and track resolution through established defect‑tracking tools (e.g., JIRA/XRay, DevOps Boards)
• Ensure all testing activities comply with VA, Federal, and program-specific standards, including:

• Section 508 accessibility
• Quality and documentation expectations
• Enterprise modernization experience
• Large-scale system integration

• Participate in Agile ceremonies and contribute to sprint planning, refinement, and retrospectives.
• Support continuous improvement of QA processes, automation coverage, and testing efficiency.
• Provide clear reporting on test execution, coverage, and quality metrics to QA Manager/ lead.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or other VA-required clearance
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field

• 3–5+ years of experience in software testing with test automation knowledge
• Hands-on experience with:

• Manual testing

• API testing/ backend testing

• SQL database testing

• Strong understanding of SDLC, STLC, and Agile methodologies
• Experience testing in secure, regulated, or federal environments
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Excellent communication skills for interfacing with internal teams, cross‑functional teams, and VA stakeholders
• Detail‑oriented with a commitment to quality and compliance
• Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced, Agile federal environment
• Quick learner, able to rapidly absorb new tools, systems, and domain knowledge
• Able to process, interpret, and understand critical, complex business rules and translate them into effective test scenarios

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of or hands-on experience with Tricentis TOSCA for model based/ automated testing
• Prior experience supporting VA, DoD, HHS, or other federal agencies
• Familiarity with VA systems such as VESEE, VistA, Cerner/Oracle Health, EHRM, IAM, ServiceNow
• Experience with or knowledge on:

• Performance testing (JMeter, LoadRunner)
• Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure)

WORKING CONDITIONS

Standard Business hours are Monday through Friday. Occasional extended or weekend hours may be required based on operational needs. Must have reliable internet service that allows for effective telecommuting on days working remote.

PAY RANGE

The base salary range for this position is $89,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on geographic work location, relevant experience, skills, education, internal equity, security clearance, and contract requirements. Geographic salary ranges are determined in accordance with the company's compensation practices and represent a good-faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting.
