Mechanic Helper

The Mechanic Helper assists the Public Works Mechanic and Director in the maintenance, repair, and servicing of the Town's fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, and small engines. This position provides hands-on support with preventative maintenance, basic mechanical repairs, and shop operations to ensure Town equipment is safe, reliable, and operations.

This is a full-time position, working 40 hours weekly and reporting directly to the Public Work's Director.

Assist in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of Town vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery.

Perform routine preventative maintenance including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, tire checks, and battery servicing.

Assist with brake, suspension, steering, and exhaust repairs under supervision.

Operate hand tools, power tools, and basic diagnostic equipment safely.

Clean, organize, and maintain the maintenance shop, tools, and equipment.

Assist with minor repairs on small engines, pumps, and power tools.

Maintain records of work performed, materials used, and equipment serviced.

Ensure compliance with safety procedures, OSHA standards, and Town policies.

Assist with emergency repairs, after-hours work, and storm response as required.

Communicate equipment issues or safety concerns to supervisors promptly.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Basic knowledge of automotive and mechanical repair principles.

Ability to safely use hand and power tools.

Willingness to learn mechanical repair techniques and procedures.

Understanding of basic workplace and equipment safety practices.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Ability to perform physical labor and work outdoors as required.

Basic use and navigation of computer systems.

Must speak English.

High school diploma or GED preferred.

Some experience or vocational training in automotive, diesel, or mechanical repair preferred.

Valid State of Florida driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Ability to pass background check, drug screening, and physical examination.

Work performed primarily in a maintenance shop and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 lbs., and working in confined spaces.

Exposure to noise, grease, oils, fumes, moving mechanical parts, and other hazards associated with mechanical and field work.
