Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: MedSurg/Tele Float Pool Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 2 years License: License Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS Must-Have: All travelers must take and pass a cardiac rhythm exam. Description: Unit/Department MedSurg/Tele Float Pool. The float pool includes multiple units. Common diagnoses include CHF, cardiac cath, chest pain, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, orthopedic cases, and oncology. All travelers must take and pass a cardiac rhythm exam. An RN with ACLS should easily be able to pass this exam. Nurse-to-patient ratios are mainly 1:5-6 for both days and nights. Occasionally, there may be 7 patients toward the end of the shift, depending on patient acuity. Charge nurses are available 24/7. Day charge nurses do not take patients, while night charge nurses do take patients. CNA or tech support is available on the unit. Common respiratory equipment includes CPAP and BiPAP, managed by respiratory therapists. Telemetry monitors are available, and RNs must be able to read and interpret strips. Shifts are 12 hours each, with weekend requirements of every other weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Travelers are required to work holidays as part of the rotation schedule with permanent staff. Float pool RNs report for unit assignments and may float to various units with basic telemetry patients. Scrub color for RNs is royal blue. Travelers receive 1-2 shifts of orientation with a preceptor. The charting system used is EPIC. This position supports a trauma level of 2 and operates in an acute care setting.
