We are hiring a backend-leaning Tech Lead to lead a team of 3-4 engineers and own the tech for a part of Superchat's product. This is a hands-on leadership role: you'll spend roughly half your time designing and building software and the other half enabling your team to perform at its best.
Superchat is the messaging and AI platform for 10,000+ businesses worldwide, with millions of messages a day. The company has about 100 people, is profitable, and has raised €18M. Headquartered in Berlin.
Who Superchat wants
- A strong, current backend engineer with 3+ years as a Senior or Staff Engineer, still deeply involved in software development and comfortable owning, designing and building crucial parts of production systems.
- Substantial experience with Java or another JVM language. Kotlin and AWS are a plus; the backend runs on Kotlin/Quarkus.
- Ready to lead people: a hybrid Tech Lead role, a short spell as Engineering Manager, or first steps in people leadership after successfully owning projects and architecture.
- Strong at delivery, used to fast-paced startups and driven to increase velocity.
- Product-minded: engages with product decisions, challenges assumptions and finds lean, pragmatic solutions.
- Clear communicator with engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
- Already uses AI in their development workflow and is eager to explore how it improves speed, quality and teamwork.
Who Superchat doesn't want
- Pure people manager: no longer wants to work directly on software.
- Hero engineer: makes every important decision or becomes the team's bottleneck.
- Pure delivery manager: treats engineering as ticket and timeline tracking.
- Remote-only operator: prefers fully remote work over regular in-person presence in Berlin.
Day to day
- Spend about 50% of your time on architecture, development, code reviews and important technical projects.
- Lead 3-4 engineers and take responsibility for effectiveness, technical quality and delivery.
- Work with your Product Manager on customer problems, solutions, scope and priorities.
- Set clear technical direction while enabling engineers to own decisions.
- Run regular 1:1s, give actionable feedback and support each engineer's development.
- Remove blockers, manage dependencies and spot delivery risks early.
- Improve engineering practices and explore AI across the software-development lifecycle.
- Contribute to hiring through technical interviews and candidate conversations.
You report to the Director of Engineering and regularly discuss architecture with the CTO and product with the CPO.
