Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MR)

Basic Requirements This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or mammography duties performed independently. Education: Applicants must have completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration in a post‑high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree accredited by JRCERT or recognized by the Department of Education. Current VHA employees who meet the grandfathering criteria may qualify. Grade Determinations Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MR), GS‑0647‑10. Experience: at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade GS‑09 level directly related to the position. Experience and Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage, dose monitoring, and genetic changes. Ability to utilize advanced imaging software that supports complex imaging programs and recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might increase exposures, and recommend methods to prevent such exposures. Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of X‑ray to understand equipment operation. Skill in positioning patients for a wide variety of highly complex imaging studies (CT, MRI, interventional radiology, ultrasound, mammography). Assignments Assignments above the full performance level must consist of significant scope, complexity, and variety, performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Employees are trained to work in one or more difficult and complex modalities, including performing general diagnostic procedures. MRI assignments require additional knowledge of superconducting magnets, safety factors, cross‑sectional anatomy, radio‑frequency surface coils, contrast media, power injectors, and PACS. Independent duties in MRI require advanced ARRT (MR) certification. Preferred Experience Five years of experience preferred. Physical Requirements Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over. Moderate carrying, 15–44 pounds. Pushing for up to 4 hours. Reaching above shoulder and use of fingers with good dexterity. Prolonged walking, prolonged standing, repeated bending. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing (aid permitted).
