CMT Technician Soils (Field Technician II)

This role offers the opportunity to join a Building & Construction team as a Field Technician II focused on construction materials testing with an emphasis on soils and concrete. You will perform field and site-based testing, project-specific observations, and site assessments to support major civil and commercial construction projects. Working closely with general contractors and project teams, you will operate testing equipment, interpret results, and provide clear, detailed reports that help ensure the safety, quality, and performance of new developments and existing assets.

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of construction materials testing activities, including field and laboratory testing, project-specific observations, and site assessment duties for soils and concrete.
• Operate testing equipment to conduct soil and concrete tests, including tasks such as soil sampling, soil compaction testing, concrete sampling, and concrete testing in accordance with project specifications and standards.
• Review and work from drawings, specifications, and diagrams to understand project requirements and ensure all testing and inspection tasks are completed accurately and on schedule.
• Provide clear, detailed, and timely data assessments through written reports, documenting test methods, results, observations, and any nonconformances or issues identified on site.
• Coordinate daily with the General Contractor to understand the scope of work for each day, including scheduled pours, soil work, and other activities requiring testing or inspection.
• Arrive at job sites at the designated time for day shift work, connect with the General Contractor to confirm the day's schedule, and plan testing activities accordingly.
• Set up and perform testing for scheduled activities such as concrete pours, ensuring all sampling and testing procedures comply with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
• Communicate effectively with project stakeholders, including general contractors and internal team members, to provide updates on testing progress, issues, and results.
• Check in with the General Contractor at the end of each day to confirm that all required testing and inspection tasks are complete and that the day's work is fully wrapped up.
• Report back to internal leadership at the end of the day to confirm work completion, submit reports, and receive assignments for upcoming projects or next-day work.
• Support multiple projects simultaneously, ranging from small assignments to large-scale developments such as plants, warehouses, commercial buildings, and institutional facilities.
• Apply geotechnical and civil engineering principles in the field to interpret test results, evaluate soil and concrete conditions, and support quality assurance decisions.
• Maintain testing equipment in proper working condition, follow safety procedures at all times, and adhere to all applicable occupational safety requirements.
• Use basic math, calculators, and computer tools to perform calculations, record data, and prepare electronic documentation and reports.
• Contribute to a strong team culture by working collaboratively, demonstrating reliability, and upholding an honor-system approach to timekeeping and daily assignments.

Essential Skills

• At least 3 years of construction materials testing (CMT) experience, including field work on soils and concrete.
• ACI Concrete certification (mandatory) with demonstrated experience in concrete sampling and testing.
• Hands-on soil sampling experience, including tasks such as soil boring, soil compaction testing, and soil analysis (ICC Soil Certification preferred).
• OSHA 10 certification required; OSHA 30 certification required for individuals serving as Lead Inspectors.
• Effective communication skills in written, verbal, and listening formats, with the ability to interact professionally with general contractors, project teams, and internal colleagues.
• Solid interpersonal skills to collaborate with field technicians, project managers, and clients in a professional and respectful manner.
• Proficiency with basic math, calculator use, and computer skills to perform calculations, record data, and complete electronic reports.
• Experience with construction materials testing, including soils and concrete, in a field or laboratory environment.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and diagrams to understand testing requirements and project scope.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• 5 or more years of soils inspection experience required if the candidate does not hold an ICC Soils Special Inspector Certification.
• ICC Soils Special Inspector Certification preferred for candidates performing advanced soils inspection and testing.
• Understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, including soil behavior, compaction, and bearing capacity, as applied to construction projects.
• Understanding of civil engineering principles related to foundations, pavements, and structural support systems.
• Experience with soil analysis, soil testing, soil boring, and soil compaction testing in support of geotechnical and construction projects.
• Experience with geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing in both field and laboratory settings.
• Exposure to or familiarity with NICET certification paths in construction materials testing is beneficial.
• Ability to manage day-to-day variety in work assignments and adapt to changing project needs and schedules.

Work Environment

The role is part of a Building & Construction team that delivers assurance, testing, inspection, certification, and building science solutions to the built environment. The team supports the architectural, engineering, and construction industry with a full suite of capabilities both in the laboratory and on site. You will primarily work in the field on day shifts, traveling from the office or home base to job sites and back, with travel time compensated on a portal-to-portal basis. Each day typically begins by arriving at the job site at the designated time, meeting with the General Contractor to review the schedule and scope of work, and planning testing activities such as concrete pours and soil compaction checks. Projects include a mix of small and large assignments, such as warehouses, plants, commercial buildings, public storage facilities, hotels, and institutional developments. A company vehicle with a gas card is provided for work-related travel. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
