Our seasoned leadership team brings together decades of experience, equipping data center providers worldwide with robust, reliable solutions that keep pace with the evolving digital landscape. As demand for high-performance infrastructure accelerates—fuelled by AI and the expanding digital landscape—SMC continues to lead through technical rigor and operational excellence. We’re seeking leaders who think beyond projects to improve the way we deliver them: individuals who elevate people, process, and performance across the firm. SMC’s Commissioning and Operations Advisory (CxOA) Team is actively looking for a Senior Electrical Advisor to support live mission critical operations and manage commissioning services for mission critical projects. Typical project types may include in-depth audits of live data center facilities, root cause analysis (RCA) investigations, operations training, auditing project deliverables, oversight of project commissioning firm for ownership, and commissioning process guidance for contractors. This candidate shall be capable of analyzing mission critical system operations, offering technical guidance to resolve identified deficiencies in efficiency, operation, or maintenance, evaluating and conducting training for facility operations staff, and reviewing design and construction deliverables for accuracy and quality. Additionally, this candidate shall be skilled in building commissioning management for assisting data center providers in onboarding commissioning agents, defining deliverables, schedule, and testing rigor, and guiding contractors through the commissioning process. The ideal candidate will also be involved in growing the expertise within the company, through internal training; development and implementation of design standards; oversight and execution of quality control practices. Responsibilities Provide leadership and oversight to contractors, vendors, and commissioning agents throughout all phases of commissioning including documentation, scheduling, and logistics. Manage commissioning agent engagement, deliverables, and execution. Inspect electrical systems installation, ensuring compliance with project specifications and quality standards. Audit facility electrical equipment and systems for end-of-life replacement, sale/purchase, and maintenance efficacy. Perform technical analysis of electrical systems operation versus design intent and identify efficiency opportunities. Conduct quality reviews of project documentation such as NETA electrical testing reports, commissioning reports, O&M procedures, etc. Meet project milestones, including working necessary hours to conduct scope. When required, travel to project sites to conduct scope (approximately 30‑50% travel). Clearly communicate with others in both written and spoken forms. Lead other engineers and consultants coordinating the tasks of multiple teams to execute project delivery of several projects simultaneously. Mentor and train other engineers and consultants to develop knowledge base. Be able to work independently while coordinating with senior personnel and other disciplines. Maintain a strong working knowledge of mechanical systems. Maintain excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Qualifications Minimum ten (10) years of experience in engineering consulting or building commissioning. Four (4) year degree equivalent in construction administration, electrical engineering or architectural engineering with an electrical focus is preferred although not required. Two (2) year degrees equivalent and EET degrees with work experience will be considered. Experience in larger industrial and commercial buildings is preferred, with experience in mission critical a strong emphasis. Familiarity with power distribution systems, battery energy storage systems, relay protection, and emergency power generation is of high importance. Experience working across the entire construction process, from schematic design through construction administration, including review of design drawings, specifications, and submittals, and field work such as site surveys, site observations, and punch lists. Experience interfacing with client, contractor, and operation teams is strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of electrical controls and power monitoring systems for electrical systems is an emphasis. Experience with commissioning management tools such as CxAlloy and BIM360 and construction management tools such as Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Helix. Professional Engineer (PE) License or Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) path to PE is a plus; however unlicensed candidates with appropriate on‑the‑job experience are welcome to apply. Have experience with the use of Bluebeam and Microsoft tools such as Word, Power Point, Excel, and Teams.
