Job Description Position: Special Education Teacher (Grades 6-8) – Breckenridge Junior High, Breckenridge, Texas Starting Date: Immediately Employment Type: Full‑time District Type: TIA District with SPED stipend and coaching position option Primary Purpose: Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in self‑contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. Valid Texas teaching certificate with the required special education endorsements for assignment. Knowledge of special needs of students in the assigned area. Knowledge of the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and IEP goal‑setting and implementation. Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs. Effective communication skills. Experience: Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience. Citizen or resident status or valid work visa. Key Responsibilities and Duties Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop IEPs through the ARD Committee process. Implement instructional, therapeutic, or skill‑development programs and provide written evidence of preparation as required. Conduct assessments of student learning styles and plan appropriate instructional strategies, materials, and equipment. Present subject matter effectively and use a variety of instructional techniques and media, including technology, to meet student needs. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula and assist special‑education students in regular classes. Participate regularly in ARD Committee meetings. Select books, equipment, and other instructional media. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing. Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding as specified in IEPs. Assume responsibility for extracurricular and outside activities approved by the principal. Consult district and outside resource persons regarding students’ education, social, medical, and personal needs. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the students’ physical, social, and emotional development. Manage student behavior, administer discipline, intervene in crisis situations, and physically restrain students as necessary according to IEPs. Consult with classroom teachers about behavior management. Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Plan and oversee work of instructional aide(s) and volunteer(s). Establish and maintain open communication through conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers. Maintain professional relationships with parents, students, and colleagues. Participate in staff development activities. Stay informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education. Compile, maintain, and file required reports, records, and documents. Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Supervisory Responsibilities Direct the work of instructional aide(s). Physical and Mental Demands Tools: Personal computer, peripherals, and other instructional equipment. Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting. Motion: Frequent walking. Lifting: Regular heavy lifting (≥45 lbs) and positioning students with physical disabilities, requirement to restrain students physically, assist non‑ambulatory students, and move adaptive equipment. Environment: Exposure to biological hazards. Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
