Education

A high school diploma or equivalent required; a B.A. degree in related field of study preferred; specialized bank consumer lending education/training preferred.

Experience

A minimum of three (3) years of experience in accounting, lending, or related positions. Formal credit training program or certification preferred.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge and experience working with a Retail Loan Origination System (LOS).
  • Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills.
  • Proficient interpersonal relations and communicative skills.
  • Knowledge of current loan servicing procedures, lending laws, and regulations.
  • Sound judgment and risk assessment.
  • Moderate computer skills.
Role and Responsibilities

Responsible for performing administrative and underwriting duties to support the consumer lending function; achieving goals as established in the bank’s business objectives; coordinating work within the department, as well as with other departments; complying with operating policies and procedures established for the consumer loan function; communicating with appropriate personnel; maintaining appropriate records and providing assigned reports.

Essential Duties

Performs administrative and underwriting duties to support the consumer lending function of which the following are illustrative:

  1. Evaluates consumer loan requests
    1. Auto Loans, Credit Cards, Home Equity, Personal Loans, and Recreational Vehicles
    2. Check for completeness and accuracy
    3. Verify personal, employment, and financial information with confirmation through use of pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements and compare income against loan requirements and internal guidelines
    4. Ensure required documentation has been provided
  2. Completes credit risk assessment
    1. Evaluate credit reports and identify any risk indicators
    2. Assess debt-to-income (DTI) ratios and repayment capacity
    3. Review collateral valuations and general loan quality.
  3. Apply lending policies and guidelines
    1. Ensure loan decisions align with risk tolerance thresholds, product guidelines, and follow regulatory compliance
  4. Approves or denies consumer loans based on consumer loan standards.
  5. Use automated underwriting systems
    1. Work within LOS to review system-generated offers and override if needed.
    2. Input data and ensure accuracy for automated models
    3. Recommend process improvements, system enhancements, automation, and workflow changes to increase efficiency and accuracy.
    4. Participates in testing and validation of system upgrades or new features

  1. Communicate with stakeholders
    1. Collaborate with loan officers, processors, and customer service to provide guidance, resolve issues, and support positive client experiences.
    2. Provide exceptional customer service and support cross-functional projects as needed.
    3. Suggest strategic and innovative strategies to achieve goals from the annual operating plan.
  2. Fraud detection and due diligence
    1. Identify inconsistencies or suspicious activity
    2. Flag potential fraud cases (fake income, identity issues)
    3. Escalate high-risk applications
  3. Portfolio and performance monitoring
    1. Prepares and analyzes reports on portfolio performance, delinquency trends, and loan quality to identify areas of improvement.
    2. Provides input on credit policy development and training initiatives to ensure consistent application of standards across consumer lending.
  4. Documentation and audit readiness
    1. Maintain clear, compliant records of decisions
    2. Ensure files meet audit and regulatory standards
    3. Document rationale for approval/denial decisions
  5. Performs additional duties and responsibilities as directed by the Director of Consumer Lending
  6. Abides by the current laws and organizational policies and procedures designed and implemented to promote an environment which is free of sexual harassment and other forms of illegal discriminatory behavior in the workplace.
  7. Cooperates with, participates in, and supports the adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and practices in support of risk management and overall safety and soundness and the bank's compliance with all regulatory requirements, e.g. Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), Equal Credit Opportunity Act, etc.; ensures that the department and all personnel adhere to the same.
  8. Responds to inquiries relating to his/her particular area, or to requests from customers, other personnel, etc., within give time frames and within established policy.
Ancillary Duties

  1. Performs tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or re-designed depending upon individual or departmental circumstances.
  2. Serve as backup to the Credit Department for tasks such as credit file maintenance, loan reviews, small business underwriting, risk rating updates, monitoring/tracking, and preparation of management reports.
Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position more than two-thirds of the time.
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to accomplish tasks.
  • Frequently communicates with others to exchange information.
  • Constantly moves wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Must be able to assess the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
