Heavy Equipment Operator I

The Dougherty County Public Works department is hiring on a continuous basis for a Heavy Equipment Operator I. The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment and trucks necessary for maintenance of grounds, buildings, and roads. Responsible for operating backhoes and bulldozers, loading and packing dirt, operating drag-line crane, clearing land, and constructing roads.

This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Essential tasks include:

  • Operating heavy equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, earthmovers, dump trucks, motor graders, dragline cranes, front-end loaders and/or tractors.
  • Clearing and preparing landscapes for forging of manholes, building new roads, pipe laying, and other construction projects.
  • Constructing roads with crewmembers by cutting slopes, pulling ditches, laying blue top on road, clipping shoulders, and maintaining right-of-way.
  • Mowing of rights-of-way, canals and ditches.
  • Loading and packing dirt and other heavy materials.
  • Performing minor preventive maintenance and repair on equipment as necessary, and/or preparing machines for major servicing; may be responsible for repairing and maintaining crane equipment.
  • Performing related work as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Supplemental information includes:

  • Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
  • Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
  • Special certifications and licenses:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
