Pharmacist

Pharmacist Position at Rural Health Services, Inc.

The Pharmacist at Rural Health Services, Inc. is responsible for delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) setting. This role ensures the safe, accurate, and compliant dispensing of medications while serving as a key clinical resource to providers and patients. The Pharmacist supports improved health outcomes through medication management, patient education, and active participation in the 340B Drug Pricing Program, while maintaining strict adherence to all regulatory and organizational standards.

Medication Dispensing & Verification

• Accurately interpret, process, and dispense prescription medications in accordance with provider orders.
• Perform final verification of prescriptions, ensuring accuracy of drug, dosage, route, and labeling.
• Identify and resolve medication errors, duplications, interactions, and contraindications.
• Ensure proper packaging, labeling, and storage of medications, including controlled substances.

Clinical & Patient Care Services

• Provide comprehensive patient counseling on medication use, adherence, side effects, and disease management.
• Assess patient adherence and develop strategies to improve compliance and outcomes.
• Monitor drug therapy effectiveness and recommend adjustments to providers as appropriate.
• Administer immunizations (if certified) in accordance with South Carolina regulations.
• Support chronic disease management programs (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, asthma).

340B Program Oversight & Compliance

• Ensure full compliance with the 340B Drug Pricing Program and HRSA guidelines.
• Maintain accurate records for 340B purchasing, dispensing, and inventory tracking.
• Assist with internal and external audits and ensure all required documentation is complete and accurate.
• Collaborate with leadership to optimize program savings while maintaining compliance.

Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance

• Adhere to all federal, state, and local pharmacy laws, including South Carolina Board of Pharmacy regulations.
• Maintain DEA compliance for controlled substances, including proper documentation and reporting.
• Participate in medication safety initiatives and adverse event reporting.
• Conduct routine quality assurance reviews and support performance improvement activities.

Collaboration & Care Team Integration

• Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and healthcare staff to optimize patient care.
• Provide drug information and clinical recommendations to providers and care teams.
• Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and patient case reviews.

Supervision & Staff Support

• Supervise, train, and support pharmacy technicians and support staff.
• Ensure staff compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Assist with scheduling and workflow coordination to maintain efficient operations.

Inventory & Operations Management

• Oversee medication inventory, procurement, and supply management.
• Ensure proper medication storage, including temperature monitoring and security.
• Manage expired, damaged, or recalled medications according to regulatory standards.
• Perform routine inventory audits and maintain accurate records.

Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic health records (EHR) and pharmacy systems.
• Generate and review reports related to dispensing, compliance, and inventory.
• Support data collection and reporting for organizational and regulatory requirements.

Patient Experience & Community Engagement

• Provide culturally competent care to a diverse patient population.
• Educate patients and the community on medication safety and wellness initiatives.
• Support outreach programs aligned with the FQHC mission.

Other Duties

• Assist in the development and revision of pharmacy policies and procedures.
• Maintain continuing education and stay current with pharmacy best practices.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational goals.

Skills/Certifications

• Active, unrestricted Pharmacist license in the State of South Carolina (Required).
• Current registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) or eligibility to obtain (Required).
• Immunization Certification (Preferred).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (Preferred).
• 340B Program knowledge or certification (Preferred).
• Strong knowledge of pharmacology, drug interactions, and clinical therapeutics.
• Ability to accurately interpret prescriptions and perform detailed verification.
• Excellent patient counseling and education skills.
• Knowledge of federal and state pharmacy regulations, including South Carolina Board of Pharmacy requirements.
• High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA.
• Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and pharmacy management systems.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Education Required

• Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy (Required).
• Completion of an accredited pharmacy residency program (PGY1) preferred but not required.
