Nurse Practitioner (Urology)

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an RN with advanced education and experience. He/She applies specialized clinical nursing knowledge and skills to patient care as well as to the improvement of the quality of care provided by others. The NP provides a unique approach to healthcare that allows the incorporation of traditional nursing skills as well as advanced practice skills in the care of patients ranging from young adulthood to geriatrics. Basic Requirements English language proficiency – in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), must be proficient in basic written and spoken English. United States citizenship – non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception – candidates who otherwise meet the education requirements but do not possess the required licensure may be appointed at the entry step on a 120‑day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis). Education – a post‑master’s certificate, master’s or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner. Applicants pending completion may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until educational requirements are met. Must be a graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by either the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). For foreign education, graduates of foreign schools must have the nurse practitioner degree equivalency validated through a recognized agency such as the International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Candidates with equivalent master’s or doctoral level degrees who possess current, full, active, and unrestricted registration and certification will meet the graduation requirement. License and Certification License – all APNs (NPs) must possess and maintain an active, current, full, and unrestricted APN license to practice as an NP in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Basic certification – all APNs (NPs) must maintain full and current board certification in a clinical specialty area from one of the following: the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), or another nationally recognized certifying body in the area in which the Nurse Practitioner is academically prepared. Scope, Education, Experience, and Dimension Criteria for APN (NP) II Scope – demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. Education and Experience – meets the basic education requirement for APN (NP). APN II is the entry grade level for APNs; no experience is required. Dimension requirements – APNs (NPs) at level II are expected to meet the following: Clinical practice – delivers evidence‑based health care, demonstrating proficiency in managing a patient panel, population, or program. Outcome focus – utilizes research and evidence‑based practice to evaluate the patient care delivery system within a patient panel or program, presents findings and contributes to changes that enhance the quality and timeliness of veteran/patient care. Leadership – works effectively as a leader within a team/unit/group and seeks interdisciplinary collaboration as appropriate to enhance patient care. Professional development – acquires knowledge and skills to develop expertise in an area of practice. Professionalism/collegiality – demonstrates effective communication skills and professional behavior, promoting cooperation and teamwork.
