Job Title: Shop Helper Job Description

The Shop Helper works in a busy fabrication shop, supporting production by safely loading and unloading trucks, moving raw steel and fabricated parts between workstations, and helping maintain a clean and organized work area. This role plays a key part in keeping drill and saw operators, fitters and welders, and painters supplied with materials so they can focus on high-quality fabrication work.

• Load and unload trucks carrying raw steel and fabricated parts using appropriate material handling equipment.
• Check steel and finished products in and out, ensuring accurate documentation of inventory moving on and off trucks and within the shop.
• Move steel and other materials from station to station and bay to bay so drill and saw operators, fitters and welders, and painters have the materials they need at their workstations.
• Handle materials safely with forklifts, pallet jacks, and other equipment as required.
• Assist with general labor tasks, including sweeping up metal shavings and debris to keep the shop clean and safe.
• Help grind parts and perform basic preparation work so components are ready for fabrication and finishing.
• Use hand tools and power tools as needed for material handling and basic shop tasks.
• Support inventory control by following established processes for checking materials and finished products in and out.
• Maintain a clean and organized shop and workstations, promptly cleaning up after tasks and at the end of shifts.
• Follow all safety procedures and guidelines while working in the fabrication shop environment.

• At least 3 years of experience loading and unloading trucks in an industrial or fabrication environment.
• At least 3 years of experience checking inventory in and out and handling materials within a plant or shop.
• At least 3 years of experience moving materials around a plant from station to station or bay to bay.
• Experience operating material handling equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks.
• Background in general labor within a manufacturing or fabrication setting.
• Proficiency using hand tools and power tools for basic shop and material handling tasks.
• Experience unloading and handling steel and other heavy materials.
• Ability to perform cleaning duties, including sweeping and maintaining a tidy shop and workstations.
• Ability to follow safety procedures and work effectively in a fabrication shop environment.

• Experience working in a fabrication shop or similar industrial environment.
• Comfort working around drill and saw operators, fitters and welders, and painters, with an understanding of their material needs.
• Strong attention to detail when checking materials and finished products in and out.
• Reliable work ethic and willingness to perform a variety of general labor and support tasks.
• Ability to work collaboratively with production teams and follow instructions from supervisors.
• Physical ability to handle steel and other heavy materials safely throughout the shift.

This role is based in a fabrication shop environment with active production areas that include drilling, sawing, fitting, welding, and painting stations. You work around steel materials, industrial equipment, and power tools, and spend most of the day on your feet handling, moving, and organizing materials. The setting is hands-on and fast-paced, with an emphasis on safety, cleanliness, and keeping workstations supplied and orderly.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbiana, AL.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
