Experience Employment as a sworn Police Officer with a California P.O.S.T. certified agency or successful completion of a P.O.S.T. approved police academy by date of appointment Receipt of California P.O.S.T Basic Course Waiver by date of appointment counts towards experience. Training Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, other high school equivalency test approved by the California Department of Education or a or higher level degree from an accredited educational institution. License or Certificate Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment. Possession of one of the following: A current California P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission) academy Graduation Certificate POST Proof of Eligibility (POE) Basic Certificate Basic Course Waiver by date of appointment Must obtain CPR and First Aid certificates within first 12 months of employment. Must be age 21 by date of appointment. Employees must be tobacco free and cannot use tobacco products on or off duty. Note: All sworn police officers must maintain a current, valid proof of eligibility or basic certificate issued from CA POST in compliance with Penal Code 13510.1 and Government Code 1029. If the police officer’s proof of eligibility or basic certificate is revoked or decertified, they are no longer qualified to perform their job duties and employment may be terminated. Selection Process All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will have their application scored in a Formula Rate Examination. The applicant’s experience and education will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the Employment List. Supplemental questions will be utilized by the department hiring authority to make interview and selection determinations. Final appointment is contingent upon a check of past employment references, passing a City-paid fingerprint check, and depending on the position applied for, a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol screening test, credit check, license and/or education verification, psychological examination, and/or an extensive Police Department background check process.
