Patient Care Associate
As an integral part of the clinical care team, the Patient Care Associate is responsible for patient care and support activities promoting patient focused care within the Specialty Service. The Patient Care Associate supports the registered nurse in patient care activities, such as: assisting patient with activities of daily living, collecting specimens and performing procedures; maintaining a safe, clean environment; and other duties as needed.
The Patient Care Associate demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks. They demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area. They perform and record patient's vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respirations. They document intake and output and other data as assigned. They obtain patient's rating on pain scales as a fifth vital sign in all areas except Pediatrics. They perform clinical procedures, such as specimen collection including blood glucose, venipuncture, EKG, application of compression devices, post-mortem care, and maintenance of skin integrity. They set up for selected procedures and assist RN's accordingly. They assist patient with activities of daily living, such as feeding, bathing and/or toileting. They orient patients to clinical environment. They assist patient with ambulation and all levels of mobilization. They assist with dietary functions, including delivering and collecting patient trays at bedside, passing menus to patients and assisting them with menu completion, mixing nutritional supplements, reporting variation in eating patterns to RN/Dietitian, and maintaining accurate and timely systems for transmission of patient dietary orders and changes. They maintain a safe, clean and functional environment, including ensuring for the comfortable movement of the patient. They assist the patient in room maintenance, such as bed-stripping and trash removed, when necessary. They perform on-to-one observation or close observation status of patients, e.g. safety, elopement risk, or suicide prevention. They maintain "isolation status" for patients under direction of an RN and according to set procedures. They perform scheduled hourly care checks/rounding on patients with emphasis on caring for toileting needs, comfort, and positioning and pain awareness. They notify RN if rounding has not been completed. They utilize Vocera system/Mount Sinai phone according to sign in/sign out protocol where activated. They perform other duties as assigned, including generating reports. They are open and responsive to the diverse backgrounds and experience of other people and promote an environment that is sensitive to cultural diversity. They respect and value each patient's unique, individual needs, beliefs, and diversity and incorporate these into delivery of care. They greet visitors and answer telephones promptly and courteously. They escort visitors to appropriate area, when necessary. They provide information as appropriate. They answer Patient Call System and refer calls to appropriate staff. They maintain a safe, clean and functional environment, including removing trash and bringing physical plant and equipment problems to the attention of the managers. They transport patients to stretchers or wheelchairs, as required. They deliver and collect trays and bedside, deliver flowers to patients. They strip units/cubicles. They perform emergency clean-up. They perform emergency transport. They perform discharge bed making. They transport specimens. They update communication board/discharge log. They assemble medical records. They update Admission/Transfer/Discharge System/Processes. They maintain supplies and care of equipment.
The Patient Care Associate participates in the department's performance improvement activities. They maintain patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information. They observe the Health Care System's compliance policies.
They participate in the development of other staff members. They meet regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements. They identify learning strengths and needs. They utilize learning resources.
They demonstrate a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others. They display courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community.
Qualifications include a High School Diploma (graduate or equivalent). They have a Certificate of completion of a medical assistant/patient care assistant program/equivalent with skills in venipuncture and EKG. They have interpersonal skills to communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the Specialty Service. They have documentation of Medical Assistant/Patient Care Associate training. Three to nine months of healthcare experience is preferred. They have the ability to set priorities, problem solve, use proper judgement in difficult situations and be flexible. They have sufficient oral and writing skills in the English language in order to communicate effectively. They have physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform a variety of tasks and skills in the area of assignment. They have American Heart Association Heartsaver or BLS Certification.

Compensation
The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $27.8502 - $29.8773 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
