Director of Accounting & Finance | Houston, TX | Comp range : $170 - $180k, plus competitive bonus and benefits package This senior leadership opportunity at a growing service-sector organization in Houston will leverage your technical accounting depth, strategic mindset, and hands‑on leadership to have immediate and visible impact. You will drive financial and accounting operations, leading month‑end close, overseeing balance sheet integrity, driving GAAP compliance, and serving as a trusted partner to the CFO on budgeting, financial modeling, and forecasting. You will provide direction and oversight on day‑to‑day close activities while also operating at the executive level on financial strategy and decision‑making. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable working tactically in the details and strategically with the C‑suite and PE ownership group. The company is also navigating an active audit cycle, and your ability to coordinate with external auditors and see that process through to completion is essential. Key Responsibilities Lead month‑end close activities, including oversight of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation in compliance with GAAP. Oversee balance sheet integrity — full reconciliation and review of accounts is a core and non‑negotiable expectation of this role. Oversee the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness. Lead the organization through audit completion and serve as the primary point of contact for external auditor coordination. Work with the company's external tax advisors to ensure accurate and timely filings. Partner with the CFO on budgeting, financial modeling, and forecasting — contributing meaningfully to the financial strategy of the organization. Collaborate with executive leadership and PE ownership to support operational and strategic decision‑making. Monitor company performance against the operating budget and established KPIs; communicate results and insights clearly to leadership. Support acquisition analysis and fundraising activities as needed, providing financial modeling and due diligence support. Provide hands‑on direction and oversight to the Controller and Senior Accountant on day‑to‑day close activities and financial operations. Oversee and develop the financial accounting team, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement. Maintain the integrity of the company's financial statements and internal reporting across all functions. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including demonstrated leadership of an accounting or finance function. Deep understanding of GAAP and sound accounting practices — balance sheet fluency is non‑negotiable. CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credential preferred; CPA not strictly required but the technical ability to perform at that level is. Excellent analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail. Proven ability to manage and develop a team of finance and accounting professionals. Strong communication skills — able to interact effectively with the CFO, PE ownership, external auditors, and financial institutions. Comfortable in a small‑company environment: willing to handle both strategic work and tactical execution without hesitation. Hands‑on, proactive leadership style — you do not wait to be directed. Experience in a service‑industry environment. Local to Houston, TX — this is a hybrid, in‑person role. Experience with a cloud‑based ERP or accounting platform. Background in multi‑entity or PE‑backed environments.
