Job Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description

The Phlebotomist II supports high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshooting workflow issues, training others, and recommending process improvements. This role ensures accurate specimen handling, labeling, and processing while maintaining strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards and delivering clear, courteous communication to patients and clinical staff.

• Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring safe and accurate venipuncture techniques.
• Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
• Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients, ensuring they understand what to expect.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure proper identification and traceability.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
• Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport according to protocol to maintain specimen integrity.
• Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following all specific procedures for transport.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
• Update patient information accurately and in a timely manner in the appropriate systems or records.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries from patients, providers, or internal staff, as appropriate.
• Troubleshoot workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality.
• Participate in training activities and assist in training other staff members as needed.
• Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant procedures and policies.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.

• At least 2 years of experience as a phlebotomist.
• Proficiency in performing blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Demonstrated ability to complete approximately 30–90 blood draws per shift independently.
• Prior experience working with geriatric patients.
• Prior experience working with pediatric patients.
• Strong patient care skills, including clear and courteous communication.
• Ability to accurately label, process, and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory requisitions.
• Attention to detail to ensure accurate matching of requisition forms to specimen tubes and verification of test orders.
• Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
• Ability to handle patient information with accuracy and confidentiality.
• Competence in answering telephone inquiries and reading laboratory results to provide information as needed.

• Experience troubleshooting workflow issues and making recommendations to improve processes.
• Experience participating in or providing training within a laboratory or clinical setting.
• Familiarity with centrifugation, splitting, and freezing of specimens based on test requirements.
• Ability to perform decontamination tasks and record maintenance data accurately.
• Comfort working with a wide range of patient populations and clinical staff.

This role operates in a clinical or laboratory environment that requires frequent blood draws and specimen handling throughout the shift. The Phlebotomist II uses equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and various specimen containers and tubes. The position involves managing a high volume of blood draws, typically ranging from 30 to 90 per shift, while maintaining accuracy and patient comfort. Work includes adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, participation in annual departmental trainings, and strict compliance with procedures for specimen collection, labeling, storage, and transport. The environment emphasizes patient care, safety, and efficient workflow, with regular interaction via telephone and in person to support patients, providers, and internal teams.

This is a Contract position based out of Houston, TX.

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

This is a fully onsite position in Houston,TX.
