Pharmacy Manager, Hematology/Oncology

Position Summary Pharmacy Manager of Hematology/Oncology responsible for leading, supporting, and managing the oncology pharmacy team at Boston Medical Center. Develop strategies and initiatives to improve patient care and satisfaction, set department goals, ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, departmental policies, and hospital core beliefs while maintaining highest standards of patient care and safety. Manage pharmacy staff and collaborate with hospital leaders to promote a healthy and efficient work environment. Position Details Position: Pharmacy Manager Department: Hematology/Oncology Schedule: Full Time Essential Responsibilities / Duties Operational Management Manage daily pharmacy operations, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations as well as organizational policies and procedures. Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) that support safe, efficient, and high‑quality pharmacy services. Oversee medication management processes including procurement, preparation, storage, and distribution to ensure accuracy and safety in all settings. Assist with project management, including planning, execution, stakeholder engagement, and presenting findings to senior leadership. Oversee high‑cost drug utilization for the ambulatory areas utilizing Hematology/Oncology and other high‑cost specialty drugs. Provide on‑call support as required, maintaining readiness to address urgent pharmacy operational and clinical needs. Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and support audits and regulatory inspections as needed. Possess self‑management skills and require little to no supervision; self‑motivating, strong work ethic, and ability to identify issues or opportunities that require attention and change. Leadership and Human Resource Management Supervise and provide leadership to pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy liaisons and support personnel, to maintain high standards of service and safety. Manage human resource functions, including recruitment, performance evaluations, staff development, training, orientation, scheduling, and disciplinary actions when necessary. Create and maintain a healthy work environment where staff feel supported, accountable, and engaged in organizational initiatives. Act as liaison to and communicate regularly with interdisciplinary leadership teams. Stay current with trends and developments in pharmacy practice and healthcare. Financial and Budget Management Participate in budget development and financial management, including identifying cost‑saving opportunities and managing drug budgets effectively. Support financial processes such as forecasting needs, conducting financial assessments of value. Assist with the management of productivity, focusing on schedule creation and management with knowledge of metrics, real‑time performance, and proactive flexible position control. Clinical and Educational Collaboration Collaborate with hematology and oncology clinical teams to develop and implement clinical programs that enhance patient care and optimize therapeutic outcomes. Develop and implement training programs for pharmacy staff, the PGY2 oncology pharmacy resident, and students to ensure clinical and operational competency and foster professional development and continuous learning. Train and mentor pharmacy staff according to defined outcome expectations and responsibilities, supporting education and maximizing professional potential. Quality Assurance and Process Improvement Lead quality assurance initiatives and process improvement projects to enhance efficiency and safety within the pharmacy department and support departmental goals. Utilize the hospital's values as the basis for decision‑making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission. Work with the medication safety officer for review and/or follow up of safety reports and concerns related to the area. Job Requirements Required Education and Experience Must have completed a degree in Pharmacy (Bachelor’s or PharmD). Experience: PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency and PGY-2 Pharmacy Specialty or HSPAL Residency PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency and 2 years of pertinent experience 4 years of pertinent experience Preferred Education and Experience Advance Degree (Master’s, MBA) and/or completion of an accredited residency highly desired. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations Required Work requires licensure as a pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the hire date. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations Preferred N/A Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Comprehensive understanding of all procedures, systems, and equipment used by pharmacists and technicians in the pharmacy and a high level of proficiency in performing duties and responsibilities. High level of analytical ability, organizational and personal management skills to function as a role model and focus to ensure a concerted approach to operations. Must evaluate current pharmacy services and procedures to improve them by gathering data from a wide variety of sources through an evaluative research process. Some practice experience working with, revising, and/or implementing information systems. High level of interpersonal skills to relate to hospital healthcare personnel working cooperatively and collaboratively to resolve situations and problems, effectively communicating and displaying leadership within and outside of the department. High level of proficiency with standard software used in healthcare office settings (e.g., MS Word, Excel, web browser, etc.). Experience with pharmacy and clinical database systems (such as QS1, Centricity, Meditech, Cerner, EPIC, SCM) is a plus. Compensation Range $112,000.00 - $162,500.00. This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. Compensation is determined by education, experience, skills, certifications, and business/organizational needs.
